Birth v Rating
How many people were born in the same year as their FIDE rating?
I am aware of one person born in 1954 whose rating is 1954.

Evening Mr Foley - would you care to retract your description from October 2018 of me as a troll? You disappeared on the previous occasion.

Re: Birth v Rating
Those who play a lot of rated chess find their FIDE rating changes nearly every month. Every so often it coincides with their birth year for those broadly in the performance range 1930 to 2010. If you can recall a historic event, you can remember your rating. Mine's currently Dunkirk/Battle of Britain, but it has been Festival of Britain.John Foley wrote: ↑Thu Jan 23, 2020 7:13 pmHow many people were born in the same year as their FIDE rating?

Re: Birth v Rating
How many people have a rating between 1940 and 2010 could also be a title of the topic..
Lose one queen and it is a disaster, Lose 1000 queens and it is just a statistic.

Re: Birth v Rating
My (dormant) rating has been stuck at the last year of the last millennium for a number of years. My ECF grade (if you exclude the leading 1) is likely to coincide with my age before long, at least until the ECF tinker with the numbers, by which time the aim will be to keep it above the current year.

With apologies for upping the geekery... here are some useful science fiction dates to aim for:
2049: Bladerunner 2049, of course
2154; Dalek Invasion of earth
2179: Aliens movie
2256: Babylon 5 launched
2305: Captain Jean-Luc Picard born (I am very happy to be here, although I am hoping the ECF conversion gets me to the Borg...)
2419: Buck Rogers wakes up in the 25th Century
2517; Events of Firefly - appropriately GM level maps to the greatest sci-fi TV of all time!

Extending this list may be problematic because of doubts cast by Zager and Evans regarding whether any chessplayers will still be alive in 2525.Paul Cooksey wrote: ↑Fri Jan 24, 2020 1:49 pm2049: Bladerunner 2049, of course

Check out John Foley's friends. Completely unable to handle dissenting views. Its not just on this forum. I asked a question at Council and got a condescending answer. And he is economic with his CV. It took more than one e-mail before his claim to be an ECF Director was corrected by CSC - hope he didn't derive pecuniary benefit from the mis-representation.

'T' seems to be a Troll. Other than that the thread's funny science fiction. Chess for all ages.

Nick Grey - please don't repeat the trolling accusation unless you genuinely believe it. John Foley dropped it into a discussion to deflect from a polite line of questioning about those in positions of chess authority in ECU and FIDE that he supported in spite of there being evidence that they might lack probity and in truth merit support only as the least worst option. It was a genuine attempt at discussion on a public forum. If discussions simply consist of one-sided statements there is no discussion and no forum. There are trolls but accusing me of trolling was a way to avoid challenge.

I was away 48 hours. I post here because there are topics of discussion which interest me. I don't post hoping to find an echo chamber of my pre-existing ideas, and I also try to treat all posters views with respect and interest. I don't dismiss them out of hand just because they are expressed by people who are 'different' to me. You don't need a large bank balance or a smart suit to post on the forum just an interest in the topics raised. To be honest I don't really think anybody needs to justify posting. However, if you wish to answer then why do you post?

I am aware of one person born in 1954 whose rating is 1954.
You don't specify period or rating type - standard, rapid or blitz (or online Arena for that matter). In the current period for ENG registered players a quick search reveals these players -
FullName DoBYear Period RatingTypeName
Twitchell, David J 1960 202001 OTBBlitz
Bak, Andrew 1988 202001 OTBRapid
Foley, John P 1954 202001 OTBStandard
Doran, Chris 1970 202001 OTBRapid
Habershon, Paul F 1946 202001 OTBBlitz
Palucha, Szymon 1996 202001 OTBStandard
All told I found 502 player/DoBYear/Period/RatingType matches for ENG registered players with the earliest one being -
Chevannes, Sabrina L 1986 200304 OTBStandard
Obviously quite a few of these are the same players who's ratings didn't change for a number of periods.
Ah, but I was so much older then. I'm younger than that now.

There is no need for the rather childish name calling so consider this a warningJ T Melsom wrote: ↑Fri Jan 24, 2020 9:13 pmCheck out John Foley's friends.
