Case for Essex independence

Essex is beginning to raise the flag of independence, and one day it might just manage to break away from the empire. Forget what contemptuous cosmopolitans have told you through their perpetually sneering lips; Essex is a beautiful, historic, prosperous and cultured place, and it deserves better than to be ruled by the wasters of Westminster.

...

Nobody should dismiss the economic attractions of Essex, either. This county, this disrespected province, is the 53rd-largest economy in the world, and it’s being exploited by the tax-happy turpitude of the tyrants to our west.

How bizarre! But also my best chance of making an Olympiad team.

I wouldn't know about that. The Scottish referendum is arguably symptomatic of deeper problems. A couple of recent articles that argue this way:

There's some talk along similar lines here in the US and to my mind it's merely a question of time. An interesting essay in the current New Left Review (but behind a paywall, unfortunately) looks at the prospects:

When imperial projects go awry (as inevitably they must) and the cake is shrinking then secessionary projects gather steam.
