Karpov was one of the 351 members of the State Duma voting in favor of the recognition of the Donetsk People's Republic (DNR) and the Luhansk People's Republic (LNR). Karpov yesterday emerged on the European Union's list of individuals and legal entities that sanctions were imposed on. The EU sanctions include a freeze of assets of these persons on the territory of the EU as well as blocking them from traveling into the EU.

Has Kasparov said much yet (I am sure he must have done).

Kasparov's views mentioned here:

Jonathan Freedland in 'The Guardian' wrote:Putin had hardly kept his worldview secret until now. On the contrary, he had acted on it at least three times in the past 15 years, each time paying little price. He seized a chunk of Georgia in 2008 and of Ukraine in 2014, to say nothing of his decision to adopt the Assad regime’s murderous war against the Syrian people as his own a year later. We may have forgotten about all that – the Russian dissident Garry Kasparov laments the “amnesia of the west” – but Putin had not. He noted the western shrug that greeted his annexation of Crimea: how, just four years later, Russia was cheerfully hosting the football World Cup.
And an article on Putin's irrationality:

Some of the deputies who voted for that annexation have apparently gone public in saying they were effectively duped.

(which is quite brave of them, if nothing else)

Did they say what they thought they were voting for?

Just the incorporating of those bits into Russia, not permission for an all out war.

I take the opportunity to send best wishes to a member of our 4NCL squad who sets off in the morning to drive to the Poland/Ukraine border taking with him essential supplies to assist the Ukrainian refugees.

There is a programme on Channel 4 tonight, 8pm until 9pm. Titled "What if Putin goes nuclear?" presented by Jon Snow.

I'm sure he will present it with his usual balance.

Interested to know whether those reading this forum think of this long analysis (worth reading, IMO):

https://sethabramson.substack.com/p/the ... -about-the

"The Ten Hardest Truths About the War in Europe" by Seth Abramson.

It does make depressing reading, but the one thing I think the author fails to fully explore is how different 21st-century warfare is with the features of the modern information age, and the ability for events to happen on a more compressed timescale. Things could (hopefully) change for the better very quickly if various dominoes start to fall in Russia.

Yes - off topic of course, but "9/11" is remembered partly because it was in the West, and partly as it was on live TV. A similar attack in Malaysia(?) is almost completely forgotten. But live footage of explosions, missiles, bodies pulled from rubble does get attention. Everyone has some idea of what is happening.

With modern guidance systems, you should be able to put a bomb down a targeted chimney, rather than hitting hospitals of course.

Good for them - someone in Somerset did the same and said later it might have been better to take an empty lorry and buy supplies at a supermarket nearer the border. But you don't know that, and obviously any help is good.
