"how different 21st-century warfare is with the features of the modern information age, "

Yes - off topic of course, but "9/11" is remembered partly because it was in the West, and partly as it was on live TV. A similar attack in Malaysia(?) is almost completely forgotten.
Which similar attack is that? The closest I could find was this:

I thought there was something similar after "9/11"...

There is a programme on Channel 4 tonight, 8pm until 9pm. Titled "What if Putin goes nuclear?" presented by Jon Snow.
I'm sure he will present it with his usual balance.
How does one give a "balanced" account of thermonuclear war, then.

Channel 4 has suddenly changed its schedule. 8pm to 9pm. Matt Frei is hosting a debate titled "Ukraine: Should we do more?"

From https://www.bbc.co.uk/:

Maria Baronova is the highest-profile resignation at RT, formerly known as Russia Today. Former chief editor at RT, she told the BBC's Steve Rosenberg this month Mr Putin had already destroyed Russia's reputation and that the economy was dead too.

A number of other RT journalists have also resigned, including non-Russian journalists working for its language services.

Former London correspondent Shadia Edwards-Dashti announced her resignation on the day Russia invaded Ukraine without giving a reason. Moscow-based journalist Jonny Tickle quit on the same day "in light of recent events".

French RT presenter Frédéric Taddeï said he was leaving his show because France was "in open conflict" with Russia and he could not continue to host his programme Forbidden to Forbid "out of loyalty to my country".

Putting this here (spotted in another thread):

FIDE Ethics imposes a six-month ban on Karjakin

[...]

"“The statements by Sergey Karjakin on the ongoing military conflict in Ukraine has led to a considerable number of reactions on social media and elsewhere, to a large extent negative towards the opinions expressed by Sergey Karjakin”, reads point 7.37 of the 10-page document where the EDC explains the reasons and legal background for its decision."

[...]

“The EDC Chamber finds, against the background given above, on the standard of comfortable satisfaction that the statements of Sergey Karjakin, which, by his own choice and presentation, can be connected to the game of chess, damage the reputation of the game of chess and/or FIDE. The likelihood that these statements will damage the reputation of Sergey Karjakin personally is also considerable”, it concludes.

Marcus Gosling (Epsom Chess Club supremo) has decided on an unusual way to help...

"AN EXPEDITION IN AID OF UKRAINE
Finally, something a little different. Aside from being a chess enthusiast and teacher, I recently developed an interest in hiking and outdoor challenges, one of which went viral when I uploaded a video of it to YouTube a few months ago.

In the first week of April, I am teaming up with two complete strangers for an unusual challenge. We are attempting to become the first team to cross Scotland from the west coast to the east coast unaided and in a completely straight line. This 70km expedition will test our skills to the maximum and we must overcome any obstacle on our line without deviating. A bizarre idea you might think, but there is a whole community of these 'straight-line enthusiasts' on YouTube!

However, we will be carrying out this challenge to raise money for the Disasters Emergency Committee to help the citizens of Ukraine.

He must have done well, then.

A bit strange this one, seems like Lautier had lots of little tie-ins with Russian financial entities and was a specialist it appears on Mergers & Acquisitions and it was this accumulation which got him on the US Sanctions list. He denounced the Crimea invasion previously and therefore there is little doubt he is against the current one. He managed to get on the sanctions list on the same day as Karpov. There is a lot more on this from the French financial newspaper Les Echos

A story of how German chess is providing a home for a talented 12-year-old Ukrainian chess refugee:

Retired colonel speaks out on Russian TV
"The biggest problem with [Russia's] military and political situation," he continued, "is that we are in total political isolation and the whole world is against us, even if we don't want to admit it. We need to resolve this situation.

"The situation cannot be considered normal when against us, there is a coalition of 42 countries and when our resources, military-political and military-technical, are limited."

ICCF froze all Correspondence chess games involving players from Ukraine when the invasion happened, then unfroze them about a month ago. My last move to my Ukrainian opponent (just before the war started) was accompanied a supportive message. It was a big relief when a move arrived this morning, with this message.

"We have big losses. We are very grateful to the people of Britain for support. We will defend ourselves to the end."
