Football trivia Q

Post by MJMcCready » Fri Nov 15, 2024 11:34 am

Curtis Jones scored on his debut for England last night. Who (according to Talksport) was the last player to do this before him..

Clue: this is a difficult question to answer.

No googling please.

Do you mean the last player before Curtis Jones?

The most recent one I can think of is Harry Kane in 2015, but it's entirely possible someone else has done it since.

Sammy Lee was the previous Liverpool player to score on debut. There have been plenty of others since then, Rashford and Lambert as well as Kane as Jack notes above.

Ah so thats where they went wrong then. Okay well one not from Talksport is this: England once had 5 professional divisions, Div3S and Div3N which is the only team to have played in all 5?

"England once had 5 professional divisions, Div3S and Div3N which is the only team to have played in all 5?"

In those days, it went (correctly!), Div 1, Div 2, Div3S and Div3N, so there were still only 4 divisions. Even some of the teams lower than that are/were professional to at least some extent.

Yes, but the question presumably means they played in both the old third divisions at different times.

I get that, but there weren't 5 divisions

I think MJMcCready used the wrong tense maybe?

"When the FA Premier League was formed, the Third Division become the fourth tier of English football."

My interpretation of the question is that you need a team that has played in the Premier League, and in the four levels below that. The mentioning of Div3S and Div3N is confusing without further clarification.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_f ... gue_system

Current structure here:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_f ... 8_2024.png

From Football League Third Division:
The split Third Divisions - This league continued in 1921–22 as Football League Third Division South whilst the Football League Third Division North was formed with the Northern clubs, the two Divisions jointly forming the third tier. Geographical separation was abolished in 1958 with the creation of the Football League Fourth Division.
So MJMcCready needs to clarify the dates in question here. Between which dates did England once have 5 professional divisions?

Whatever he means I am guessing Northampton. I think they once had three successive promotions or relegations.

The 5 "professional" divisions are:

1. The Premier League
2. The Championship
3. League One
4. League Two
5. The National League

According to wiki "Most National League clubs are fully professional (only three are not in the 2023–24 lineup)". Before reading this I would have agreed with Kevin - the National League (previously called "The Football Conference in the years I used to semi-regularly attend matches) used to be mainly very amateur/ non-professional. Slightly confusingly the title "non-league" is given to all teams below level 4 which dates back to the days when the top 4 divisions were run by "The Football League".
