In the European Bridge Championships in Herning, Denmark, England came fourth out of thirty teams contesting the Open section. I must admit a family interest and am proud that my son, Tom, was one of the England team, partnering Ben Handley-Pritchard; the rest of the team was David Gold, Andrew Robson, Ben Norton and Stephano Tommasini. Congratulations to all of them.
England's performance here qualifies them for the World Championships, for the Bermuda Bowl. The "Bowl" has not been won by a British team since 1955, when Great Britain won in New York, so we have had 69 "years of hurt". The 1955 team was Leslie Dodds, Kenneth Konstam, Adam Meredith, Jordanis Pavlides, Terence Reese and Boris Schapiro (source: English Bridge Union website).

I am aware your son plays chess at a respectable level. I assume this is him

Is Ben Norton the same person as the Henley player who plays in the Berks League?

Yes, that's him, Roger. I struggle against him in 10-minute games these days! I don't know Ben Norton, but I suspect that is not the same man.
