Piece has three different technical meanings in chess, which usually have to be distinguished by context, and one of those includes pawns.
But that's hardly a technical meaning - it's what laymen would mean by piece/pieces

I thought it only had two, minor pieces and major piece, I thought pawns were just pawns.

Well, one of the technical contexts in question is the Laws Of Chess, and in those, pawns are included in the category of pieces. https://handbook.fide.com/chapter/E012023

When I ask people to put the pieces away after a club night, I expect them not to ignore the pawns.

Also when composing problems/studies - the term "pieces" as in "Black/White have X pieces" clearly includes pawns as well.
