Week 30

"My specialist subject is football." Eddie Howe bats off questions about Newcastle's Saudi Arabian owners.

Week 30 had just four matches because of clashes with the FA Cup quarter-finals. If you were in the know you could make multiple changes or indeed use a Free Hit chip if you had one left. Paul Cooksey was in the first bracket and his 80 point haul moves him up to 2nd play. In the last few weeks the gaps have widened with Sam Herring now over 150pts in front of the 6th place team. Moving on to best score of the week (and the season) "Dijk in Dias" managed by Yong Wang scored 98 points, the 17th highest of all teams this Game Week. Meanwhile Jonathan Blackburn could only find two in his 15 player squad to grace the field, one of whom was Raúl Jiménez with a score of -2. Consequently Jonathan's net score of zero was 8,942,466th and marks a new low point for the season.

1 Slumdog Mignolet Sam Herring 68 2151
2 Don't Shoot Vinny Paul Cooksey 80 2083
3 Melvinho XI Melvin Pool 46 2078
4 Lanzini'sLamborghini Joel Newman 76 2058
5 Dynamo Flick James Marley 54 2054

Up for the Cup After two matches John Reyes total stood at -2 (Jiménez again) - little surprise therefore that he was ko'd from the Overall Cup. Never Mind Week 31 sees the start of the Premier Chess Cup - teams with a good score in Week 30 receive byes. Full reports to follow!

Week 31

“I said at half-time, I'm not sure Everton know how to win a game lads.” Sean Dyche. Burnley narrow the relegation gap.

There is very little to report - our top five teams are likely to remain in place till the season's end and in roughly the same order. I hope when I summarise Week 38 that I don't have too much of that statement to retract! Week 31 was one of those weeks when no manager scored exceptionally well or badly. Best score of the week was 72 from 112th placed Samuel Gooch whilst Nathan Talbot produced the low score of 25 points.

1 Slumdog Mignolet Sam Herring 45 2196
2 Melvinho XI Melvin Pool 58 2136
3 Don't Shoot Vinny Paul Cooksey 48 2131
4 Lanzini'sLamborghini Joel Newman 64 2122
5 Dynamo Flick James Marley 41 2091

Premier Chess Cup Rather like those Friday nights at weekend congresses, there were multiple byes - in fact 121 of them as the lowest scoring 14 teams from Week 30 fought for a place in the First Round proper. Rather than list the managers that survived here are the seven managers who are eliminated in the preliminary round :- Armaan Gogia, Gaurav Kamath, Tom Thorpe, Titas Vdovycia, James Redburn, Andrew Beswick and Suhayl Abdalla. The remaining 128 managers are in the hat in Week 32.

Week 32

If we draw, we will not be champions. Pep Guardiola comments on the 2-2 draw against Liverpool.

There were some strong 90+ point scores this Game Week with James Bramman pick of the bunch with 96 points; rotten banana of the week was backmarker Chris James with 24 points. The top five are, as ever, unchanged for a seventh consecutive week; however 5th placed James Marley is now under severe pressure from previous Premier Chess winner Richard Beach who is now a mere half dozen points away from replacing James in the top five. Joel Newman, the season's most consistent manager, must also be looking over his shoulder.

1 Slumdog Mignolet Sam Herring 66 2262
2 Don't Shoot Vinny Paul Cooksey 86 2217
3 Melvinho XI Melvin Pool 55 2191
4 Lanzini'sLamborghini Joel Newman 45 2167
5 Dynamo Flick James Marley 46 2137

Premier Chess Cup News 128 managers were in the draw this round. No point in listing the 64 winners or indeed losers at this stage. When we arrive at the last 16 I'll give a full update. Biggest losers in this round were James M and Joel (see above) who were k.o'd by teams well below them.

Yes Paul I had noticed that! :( (Don't Shoot Vinny v Custard's Last Stand).

I'm not looking to be out with eight games to go though https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/61116929.

It was nip and tuck till the final set of results when Paul's Newcastle players saw him through - I can't recall selecting a Newcastle player all season :( .
It would have been rather different if I'd selected Salah as captain rather than Kane!

Week 33

“The manager came in and said this is the end of it now.” Burnley player Matthew Lowton comments on Sean Dyche sacking.

Four managers hit the 100+ heights this game week with Tim Lunn on 112pts the Number 1. Better mention Nick Grey (before he does) who scored a magnificent 107. Nick was one of several players who had Salah in their team but failed to nominate him as captain. Meanwhile sack of the week (as well as Sean Dyche) goes to David Fryer whose 4 players on the bench almost outscored the 11 on the field. At the top - well little to report - with five weeks to go can anyone break into our leaderboard?

1 Slumdog Mignolet Sam Herring 71 2333
2 Don't Shoot Vinny Paul Cooksey 77 2294
3 Melvinho XI Melvin Pool 96 2287
4 Lanzini'sLamborghini Joel Newman 81 2248
5 Dynamo Flick James Marley 98 2231

Overall A quick look at overall scores where current leading manager is Bino Baby (a pseudonym surely) with 2439 points - some 106 ahead of Sam Herring.

Week 34

Manchester United is delighted to announce the appointment of Erik ten Hag as Men’s First Team Manager United website.

There are still many issues to be solved as we enter the last weeks of the Premier League. Not however in Premier Chess where the same five leading managers are in place for a ninth successive week - there were a couple of shuffles amongst them but that's the sole change since Week 26. A similar position at the bottom where Gavin and Chris have been in 134th and 135th place for weeks. Paul Spiller did score 102 points but had a wholesale loss through transfers to reduce his overall points so Daniel Lambourne with 93 is our top score of the week. Surprisingly Samuel Watts' score of 23 was the 8,944,728th lowest of the season - which was even less than the zero points in Week 30.

1 Slumdog Mignolet Sam Herring 65 2390
2 Don't Shoot Vinny Paul Cooksey 73 2367
3 Melvinho XI Melvin Pool 58 2345
4 Lanzini'sLamborghini Joel Newman 84 2332
5 Dynamo Flick James Marley 68 2295

Premier Chess Cup. The draw for our last 16 teams is as follows:-

Don't Shoot Vinny v Salt and Pepe
Melvinho XI v Kroos Kontrol
Gine Mine Mane Mo v #Nolan Out
The Beach Boys v Woodpushers
Poisoned Prawns v FC Koniki Polne
Dunk and Disorderly v Not the Champions
LJBN v Kane and Ables
Local Legend v Muse is P1

Week 35

"Unfortunately we haven't done enough" Dean Smith on Norwich's relegation (again).

Three weeks to go and whilst James Marley is looking downwards, the top four teams are locked in Premier Chess battle as Sam Herring's lead has been gradually eroded and is now just 15 points compared with 68 in Week 30. Sam's closest challenger is Paul Cooksey who still holds a "Free Hit" chip which no doubt he will use to great effect in the forthcoming Game Week. Joint best scores of the week from Tabs Ryan & Alan Jelfs whilst backmarkers who also tied were Peter Hunt and Samuel Gooch.

1 Slumdog Mignolet Sam Herring 45 2435
2 Don't Shoot Vinny Paul Cooksey 53 2420
3 Lanzini'sLamborghini Joel Newman 74 2402
4 Melvinho XI Melvin Pool 48 2393
5 Dynamo Flick James Marley 41 2336

Overall Bino Baby still leads with 2,567 - and still with a Free Hit to play.

Premier Chess Cup - Can Paul achieve a dramatic double?

Don't Shoot Vinny 53 40 Salt and Pepe
Melvinho X1 48 33 Kroos Kontrol
Gine Mine Mane Mo 39 47 #Nolan Out
The Beach Boys 53 43 Woodpushers
Poisoned Prawns 34 76 FC Koniki Polne
Dunk and Disorderly 73 39 Not the Champions
LJBN 62 77 Kane and Ables
Local Legend 62 81 Muse is P1

Quarter Final draw

Don't Shoot Vinny v FC Koniki Polne
The Beach Boys v Melvinho X1
#Nolan Out v Kane and Ables
Muse is P1 v Dunk and Disorderly

Week 36

Watford Football Club is delighted to confirm the appointment of Rob Edwards as its new Head Coach, effective after the conclusion of the current 2021/22 season. Club Statement which caused controversy at Rob's previous club Forest Green Rovers.

If anyone is wondering about the non-appearance of this update, I've developed a rather nasty stomach bug. I managed to crawl out of bed to amend my Week 37 team - a fat lot of good that was. So Weeks 36 and 37 have been a bit of a haze. Over 50 managers scored 100+ points in Game Week 36 and as predicted Paul Cooksey played his "Free Hit" chip to overtake Sam Herring. Similarly James Marley was k'o'd from the top five by Joe Friar whose score of 176 pts (Bench Boost played) was the highest of the week. The two lowest scores of the week were 41pts - fortunately the two managers who achieved this have been lost in the mists of time.

1 Don't Shoot Vinny Paul Cooksey 137 2557
2 Slumdog Mignolet Sam Herring 100 2535
3 Lanzini'sLamborghini Joel Newman 103 2497
4 Melvinho XI Melvin Pool 98 2487
5 Frying High Joe Friar 176 2438

Cup Scores Quarter Final results

Paul (just) and Melvin are through to the semi-final

Don't Shoot Vinny 137 133 FC Koniki Polne
The Beach Boys 86 94 Melvinho X1
#Nolan Out 77 117 Kane and Ables
Muse is P1 139 124 Dunk and Disorderly

Week 37

“It’s right up there, possibly at the top. Frank Lampard - Everton escape relegation scoring three versus Crystal Palace.

Again there were several 100+ scores - surprisingly we have to look to Page 3 to see that David Grobler with 112 points was top manager; equally Alex Leslie with the lowest, a mere 17 points, is on Page 1. Chris James has been holding the wooden spoon for some weeks now - with a total of 1,409 points he is in 7,721,406th position some 1,182 points behind leader Paul Cooksey. Nevertheless in Gameweek 37, Chris outpointed Paul whose 34 points enabled his pursuers to be within touching distance. James Marley resumes his position in 5th place. Preview for Week 38 to follow!

1 Don't Shoot Vinny Paul Cooksey 34 2591
2 Slumdog Mignolet Sam Herring 48 2583
3 Lanzini'sLamborghini Joel Newman 80 2577
4 Melvinho XI Melvin Pool 56 2531
5 Dynamo Flick James Marley 88 2516

Cup Scores Disappointment for Paul and Melvin

Don't Shoot Vinny (Paul Cooksey) 34 61 Muse is P1 (Tabs Ryan)
Melvinho X1 (Melvin Pool) 44 90 Kane and Ables (Patrick Coleman)

Congrats to Tabitha and Patrick who will contest the final!

Week 38 preview

Just 14 points separate our three leading teams as we go into Week 38. All three managers Paul Cooksey, Sam Herring and Joel Newman have differing squads - no chips left to be played - so at 6.00pm tonight a new Premier Chess Champion Manager will be known. When we started in August our leading manager in Week One was Joel and he has been in the top five for all but two weeks. A determined effort in Week 37 saw him narrow the gap - could his last gasp challenge succeed? Meanwhile Sam after eight successive weeks in pole position lost out in Week 36 to Paul who had kept a "Free Hit" in reserve. Week 37 saw Liverpool field an almost totally reserve team which reduced Paul's lead with Trent A-A & Robertson's non appearance meaning substitutes replacing them. Who will play today and who will win and who will lose out?

I've managed to pick 10 Brentford players in my starting 11
which didn't do me any good at all
but at least the Bees themselves did okay :)
