Week 20

"People don't really give any respect to the Africa Cup of Nations" - Ian Wright.
ACON starts on January 9th and many players including Salah and Mane will be representing their countries.

Most captained player was Mo Salah who missed a penalty and ended up with 0 doubled to .......... 0. I can remind people that this was not a great disaster in terms of Jan Bednarek who last season scored an own goal, gave away a penalty and was sent off to score -7 which would have been -14 if he was unfortunate enough to be nominated as captain. David Lambert scored a magnificent 90 points which was amongst the highest overall scores of the week whereas Richard Dineley was low scorer for the second week in succession. Little change at the top; the bottom three managers are becoming detached and are likely to fight it out for the wooden spoon.

1 Slumdog Mignolet Sam Herring 65 1321
2 Lanzini'sLamborghini Joel Newman 60 1317
3 Melvinho XI Melvin Pool 50 1309
4 Gini Mini Mane Mo Matthew Timbrell 45 1294
5 Desperate Means Kaia Means 53 1279

Cup report As well as losing his place in the top five (above), Paul Cooksey the highest placed manager left was k.o'd in the Overall Cup. Six managers remain; five went out and one was drawn which I think will end in our favour. I'll give a full rundown after Week 21 of any remaining teams left in.

Quarter Two - Continuity Stats Weeks 11-19

The methodology is given in Quarter One so I won't go through it all again. In this quarter 70 managers had either a top five or bottom five finish. Those at the top were fairly random whilst those managers at the bottom who have neglected their teams made multiple appearances and we can expect to see more of them next quarter. Here are the stats with a minimum of two weeks needed to appear.

High scores (from +5 for best score down to +1 - number of weeks in brackets)

Eddie Hargreaves 10 pts (2)
Sam Herring 8 pts (2)
Joel Newman 7 pts (3)
Paul Cooksey 7 pts (2)
Kaia Means 7 pts (2)

Low Scores (from -5 for lowest score down to -1 - number of weeks in brackets)

Gavin Carter -14 pts (5)
Chris James -14 pts (3)
Daniel Gliddon -11 pts (3)
Richard Dineley -11 pts (3)
David Lambert -10 pts (3)
Gaurov Kamath -8pts (3)
Jonathan Blackburn -8pts (2)

plus a number of others on -5 .

Week 21

"For me, it's a pleasure to be here." Philippe Coutinho's first interview as an Aston Villa player.

Covid continues to cause havoc with fixture postponements and rearrangements. Richard York-Weaving scored a magnificent mind-boggling 115 points whilst Daniel Gliddon had a mind numbing 17 points for low score of the week. No change amongst our leading top five players; only Paul Cooksey and David Egginton remain in challenging positions to join this elite.

1 Slumdog Mignolet Sam Herring 77 1394
2 Gini Mini Mane Mo Matthew Timbrell 83 1373
3 Lanzini'sLamborghini Joel Newman 63 1372
4 Melvinho XI Melvin Pool 74 1371
5 Desperate Means Kaia Means 79 1354

Cup Report. One player (Jarrod Bowen of West Ham) was largely successful for Richard York-Weavings mammoth score when he played his "triple captain" chip. He was also largely responsible for seeing me k.o'd from the Cup. Five managers though are still in there after six rounds - they are Joe Friar, John Reyes, James Bramman, Andrew Harley & Jude Shearsby and they enter the Week 22 draw.

Week 22

"Thank you to everyone who supported us from the start" Rafa Benitez.

There have been no managerial sackings since Week 11 but Rafa's removal seemed almost inevitable. Ranieri is now the most popular choice for the boot. Sam Herring and Melvin Pool have made a determined effort to distance themselves from their rivals - and the pack have now closed in on the remaining leaders. For the first time since Week 3, James Marley appears in the top five - his score of 99 points was certainly not flakey. Nevertheless it wasn't the top score of the week with Phil Makepeace and David Fryer both with 100+ points. Player with the melted ice-lolly was Jonathan Blackburn on 23 points. Despite being away at the AFCON tournament Mo Salah was Fantasy Football's most captained player this Game Week

1 Slumdog Mignolet Sam Herring 76 1470
2 Melvinho XI Melvin Pool 97 1468
3 Lanzini'sLamborghini Joel Newman 52 1424
4 Gini Mini Mane Mo Matthew Timbrell 51 1420
5 Dynamo Flick James Marley 99 1416

Cup News All five of our managers won through Week 22 and are in the Week 23 draw.

Hopefully no one else was daft enough to make Emmanuel Dennis their captain for Watford's double match week

I'm afraid I did - as did the majority of our top ten managers. Odd that selecting Salah as captain would have been a better choice  !

Week 23

dilly-ding dilly-dong; it is dilly-ding dilly-gone Claudio Ranieri sacked by Watford.

It seems weeks - as indeed it is - since Week 23 began. We have had to wait for the Burnley-Watford match to complete the scoring; or possibly not as it was a 0-0 draw. Meanwhile at 74, Roy Hodgson becomes the oldest Premier League manager whilst Frank Lampard (affectionately called Frank Lumpalard by an ex-collegue) take over at Everton. It was a week of impressively low points in Fantasy Chess - Paul Spiller on 72 was top man with Gavin Carter on 16 points the lowest score. We lose James Marley and regain Paul Cooksey in our top five managers.

1 Slumdog Mignolet Sam Herring 33 1503
2 Melvinho XI Melvin Pool 29 1493
3 Lanzini'sLamborghini Joel Newman 41 1465
4 Gini Mini Mane Mo Matthew Timbrell 32 1452
5 Don't Shoot Vinny Paul Cooksey 33 1444

Up for the Cup All five managers, unlike Leicester City, negotiated Week 23 and are in the draw for Week 24.

My season was nicely summed up by my signing of Matt Lowton who has played 51 league games in a row and was promptly benched for the double game week I signed him for. Needless to say they kept two clean sheets.

Week 24

"This is an abhorrent way to treat a pet who should be considered a family member" Wildheart Trust reacts to Kurt Zouma kicking his cat.

Last week was a low score week - this week was the opposite (if you selected the right players). Top score was 98 by Matthew Parry with Chris James low scoring on 17. Kaia Means back into the top five. Curtailed report this week - 4NCL intervenes.

1 Melvinho XI Melvin Pool 84 1577
2 Slumdog Mignolet Sam Herring 66 1569
3 Lanzini'sLamborghini Joel Newman 66 1531
4 Desperate Means Kaia Means 94 1530
5 Don't Shoot Vinny Paul Cooksey 81 1525

Cup News We lose two - however Joe Friar, Andrew Harley and John Reyes march on into Week 25.

Week 25

"This group will get back to its level, it is just time and players coming back". Brendan Rodgers on Leicester's prospects.

Rodgers is now odds-on to be the next Premier Division manager to be sacked. Meanwhile in the race to become Premier Chess Manager of the Season we see a new name on the leader board - Tim Lunn's "TicklyTim's Team" in at number five. However now there are a mere three teams within 50 points of Melvin Poole although he has yet to shake off long time leader Sam Herring. Whilst Tim might be Mr.Tickle, Adam Bremner is certainly Mr.Happy after hitting three figures with 101 pts for the week whilst Samuel Watts could well be Mr.Grumpy after a mere 24 point haul.

1 Melvinho XI Melvin Pool 69 1646
2 Slumdog Mignolet Sam Herring 69 1638
3 Lanzini'sLamborghini Joel Newman 80 1611
4 Gini Mini Mane Mo Matthew Timbrell 76 1597
5 TicklyTim's Team Tim Lunn 86 1593

Cup News Our three teams march on into Week 26!
Overall Update on overall scores as we've not reviewed them for a while. James Angelopoulos is the current leader with 1,795 points with his team "Change Name" - wonder what it was originally called? "Gangster's Allardyce, back on top for a four week stint from Week 20, is now in 9th place.

Week 26

“I just get on with my job here and do my best.” Graham Potter after rumours of a move from Brighton.

Week 26 is the time that competitors in the know went with their triple captain chips for Mo Salah who alone scored 84 points over two matches for Liverpool. Consequently 38 of our top 40 managers scored over 100 points this game week. The amount of points in excess of that century total depended on the remainder of the selection with our top three managers, plus a couple of others exceeded 150 points. At the other end of the spectrum Chris James with 33 points was the low score of the week. Melvin Pool and Sam Herring are still out in front with Joel Newman their challenger; 4th and 5th place well behind.

1 Melvinho XI Melvin Pool 153 1787
2 Slumdog Mignolet Sam Herring 150 1780
3 Lanzini'sLamborghini Joel Newman 154 1757
4 Dynamo Flick James Marley 145 1730
5 Don't Shoot Vinny Paul Cooksey 138 1725

Cup News With all our last three teams taking advantage of triple points, they continue into Week 27 with just 4,096 teams remaining!

Week 27

"I have to act in the best interest of the club and I believe a change is required now" Statement from Leeds Chairman on the sacking of Marcelo Bielsa.

The purge on League managers continues as yet another goes - his replacement is American coach, Jesse Marsch. As we approach the cutting edge of the season are there yet other candidates for the sack? In Premier Chess for once our top five managers stay the same; however it will now take a giant leap for anyone to reach the leading three. Meanwhile after languishing on the third page, Barry Redburn at last makes it to Page Two with the best score of the week of 83 points. However with a miniscule 16 points Alberto Gissi pushes the low score of the season out to 8,787,191st. Despite the fact he was in the League Cup Final with no Fantasy game this week, Mo Salah was still the most-captained player in Fantasy Football. Alberto was one of many who elected to give Salah the armband. With Vice-Captain Saka also not playing as well, possibly an opportunity missed?

1 Melvinho XI Melvin Pool 57 1844
2 Slumdog Mignolet Sam Herring 60 1840
3 Lanzini'sLamborghini Joel Newman 58 1807
4 Dynamo Flick James Marley 59 1789
5 Don't Shoot Vinny Paul Cooksey 63 1788

Cup News Amazingly our three outstanding managers move on into Week 28. They have already seen off 12 opponents each and are now down to the last 2048. This is by far the best showing by Premier Chess representatives - how far can they go??

Week 28

" Chelsea FC would normally be subject to the same sanctions regime as Mr Abramovich." Chelsea FC statement - the future is not clear and the statement ends "The Club will update further when it is appropriate to do so

In Premier Chess Fantasy it was one of those high scoring weeks (for most). All of a sudden Sam Herring, with a score of 131, shot ahead of his challenger Melvin Pool by a gigantic 50 point margin - the remaining teams trailing by even greater amounts. Of more concern is that Melvin has no special chips left to play. Top scorer of the week was Taran Jina playing a "Free Hit" with 141 points whilst bringing up the rear was George Wright with a minimal 29 points. The top teams have now reached 2,000 points with nearly 200 teams now over this score.

1 Slumdog Mignolet Sam Herring 131 1971
2 Melvinho XI Melvin Pool 81 1921
3 Dynamo Flick James Marley 119 1908
4 Lanzini'sLamborghini Joel Newman 89 1892
5 Don't Shoot Vinny Paul Cooksey 95 1883

Up for the Cup We've lost Joe Friar; however John Reyes and Andrew Harley into the Week 29 hat!

Week 29

Frank Lampard says he broke his hand in the celebrations! Speedy recovery, gaffer! Everton Twitter.

Again it was a high scoring week for several managers with 26 exceeding 100 points. Sam Herring along with three other managers hits 2000+ points and he maintains the 50 point gap from second placed Melvin Pool. The gap between the top teams has widened substantially this quarter and in reality it looks like a two-team race. Let's look at the bottom of our League where our lowest team "one more time" managed by Chris James has just breached the 1,000 point barrier. Whilst there is still time for a challenge to Sam, Chris looks destined for 135th place and the wooden spoon. Paul Cooksey made some progress with high score 124 points - meanwhile Gavin Carter with a minimal 36 the worst of the week.

1 Slumdog Mignolet Sam Herring 112 2083
2 Melvinho XI Melvin Pool 119 2032
3 Don't Shoot Vinny Paul Cooksey 124 2003
4 Dynamo Flick James Marley 92 2000
5 Lanzini'sLamborghini Joel Newman 98 1982

Last man standing Despite scoring 102 points Andrew Harley had a -4 for two transfers and thus lost out to a team with 101 points; meanwhile John Reyes progressed to the last 500 although only scoring 79 points with his opponent just behind on 75. The Premier Chess Cup starts in Week 31.

Quarter 3 Report - Weeks 20-29

Quarter Three very much followed the pattern of the preceding quarter. Seven managers filled the top five places with a very brief appearance of an eighth as Tim Lunn paid a short visit in Week 25 before disappearing just as quickly. Sam Herring, Melvin Pool and Joel Newman were ever-presents for the quarter with the first two now setting the pace for the last nine weeks of the season. Usual methodology (5 pts for 1st place, 4 for 2nd and so on) with the number of weeks in brackets. Two weeks minimum required (sorry Tim).

Sam Herring 46 pts (10)
Melvin Pool 41 pts (10)
Joel Newman 28 pts (10)
Matthew Timbrell 12 pts (5)
James Marley 10 pts (5)
Paul Cooksey 8 pts (6)
Kaia Means 4 pts (3)

Quarter 3 Continuity Stats

I completed these up to Week 22 then missed a week and after that I've not bothered. This is largely because from the previous two quarters it showed that half of our managers had either a top five or bottom five score - some even managed both. The top scores appeared random - no manager was able to score consistently over his rivals. The low scores were rather more clear cut with several candidates (those who hadn't bothered to look at their team since the opening week) making regular appearances. Consequently having looked at the stats, I don't think it's worthwhile continuing them unless there's a mad rush of managers who want to see them. So terminated for now!
