Re: Euro 21
"From what I read in non English press, reaching the final thanks to a highly debatable penalty awarded to the home team did not make England particularly popular."
The "i" spoke to the manager of the Peru team, who commented that it was definitely a dive, and just what South American players would do! (I guess he can say that).
But it's professional sport - there is quite a lot of cheating by players, officials, and people running the various football associations.
Home sides frequently benefit from dodgy decisions - remember 1966? England's 3rd goal, which definitely did not cross the line. Why Hunt just celebrated I don't know, Greaves would have buried the rebound in the back of the net and we would still be arguing about who scored it...

I think Paolo is right. Although if he has happened to read any Italian press, they might not be the most neutral.

Italian press is obviously not to be trusted on the subject, but it was not only them. This is a good summary in English:Paul Cooksey wrote: ↑Sun Jul 11, 2021 1:47 pmI think Paolo is right. Although if he has happened to read any Italian press, they might not be the most neutral.

I made a similar point yesterday on a Mushrooms chat group. I was of course thrilled that we won, and my Mum went berserk, but my hero was ( and still is ) Greaves and if Ramsey had overcome his prejudice against players he considered lazy it would all have been so much more straightforward.Kevin Thurlow wrote: ↑Sun Jul 11, 2021 1:21 pmGreaves would have buried the rebound in the back of the net and we would still be arguing about who scored it...

I'm curious to see what's going to happen in London tonight. Quite a bit of carnage irrespective of the result.

No, quite the opposite I would imagine. Even where I live there are people partying already.

Relieved that England are playing Italy rather than Belgium - the Moretti has gone to the back of the fridge and the Trappists have come to the fore

Not sure about that England line-up to be honest, there doesn't seem to be a lot of creativity in mid field. I can see 0 - 0 and a long night ahead.

Win or lose, Piccadilly Circus will be the place to be later.
