Not sure about that England line-up to be honest, there doesn't seem to be a lot of creativity in mid field. I can see 0 - 0 and a long night ahead.
I told you so

Southgate got every single decision right until the last one. Congratulations to Italy

This is an experience with which chess players are very familiar, of course.

Well, the wing backs combined for the goal

Still only won a major tournament under a Labour government (as I remember Mike Yarwood's impression of Harold Wilson)

England have been disappointing me at Wembley since April 1972, but tonight was the closest we have been, for which Southgate takes a lot of credit

We didn't do enough to win the game I thought. We let Italy come on to us, which gave them confidence.

Why Hunt just celebrated I don't know, Greaves would have buried the rebound in the back of the net and we would still be arguing about who scored it...
Well, it wouldn't have been Hurst, because he wouldn't have been playing if Greaves was in the team. Hunt was ahead of both in Ramsey's pecking order, had played in all five matches and had three goals, compared to one for Hurst and none for Greaves.

At least I can continue to bore youngsters with stories of 1966.

I popped into the West End after half time, thinking there would be some excitement, but my plan of just following the noise failed because there wasn't much. While losing the game obviously took some air out of the balloon, I didn't get the impression that had we won there was a night of riotous celebration ahead. Most sources of food and drink were closed or had burly gentlemen barring the doors, and there were clusters of people huddled around phones in doorways that offered some protection from the drizzle. I watched the penalties by courtesy of a group who had the game on a tablet and turned out to be Italy supporters, not uncommon in Soho.

No doubt we shall read more lurid stories in the morning papers.

The last three, surely.

If Southgate decided the team should sit on their lead and let Italy come at them, he is to blame more than anyone else. We really should have pushed on for a second goal instead of trying to soak up pressure like that.

I don't think Southgate did anything that should surprise us in the final.

We have the chess world cup about to start. The strategy of being as solid as possible, particularly if you are good at faster time controls, is always one of the most effective. I think of it as the Grischuk strategy after the 2012 candidates. Southgate a follower of his, albeit with less entertaining interviews

As it has been forever, whether you are happy or disappointed with England depends on expectations. If you think we have 2800 level team and should be standing toe to toe, it is the wrong strategy. I think we are a 2750 who should be happy to have made it to the Armageddon game in the final.

Styles matters too. I'd be very unhappy if Man City played the way England do. I'd rather the team I watch every week be Dubov rather than Radjabov. But England, I just want to win, so I can live with pragmatism.

Of course Man City are very obviously Magnus at the moment, so my analogy breaking down a bit at the end!

At the prizegiving ceremony the UEFA President (?) hung a medal round each player's neck as they filed past. Most England players seemed to make a point of instantly removing their runners-up medal before they were out of camera shot. I thought that disrespectful however disappointed they were.

Yes - and disappointing as the result must have been, they were still second in a very tough competition. I don't know what they expected, but I was quite pleased they qualified for the last 16.

I also hear that the 3 Linos (typo, I meant lions) song has been prevented from being number 1, as the people who run the charts admitted they fiddled the results to stop old songs doing well. Times have changed, they never used to admit they fiddled the results...

His selections as penalty takers certainly surprised me. There must be really bad blood between him and Grealish.

Grealish saying he wanted to take a penalty, sure - but I can't help thinking of Mandy Rice Davies where this is concerned.
