Speaking to friends in the Czech Republic and Germany, we appear to have got a bad press over the laser pen incident and that few Italians will be at the final. They said most people are supporting Italy and that England is not popular.

I think Brexit has something to do with it aswell Mark. Look at the Eurovision results for the last few years.
The laser pen incident was terrible and at a critical moment. Denmark were the most popular with neutrals.

Could well be yes. The Czechs have suddenly made it a bit difficult for Brits to stay on a permanent basis, so I wouldn't be too surprised. My friend said they were supporting Denmark even though they had been knocked out by them, which I thought was a bit strange.

Lets hope Tim S and Nick F are allowed in the country to play in their Chess tournaments.
I've noticed you are just 80 posts behind Professor Robertson. I've posted about 1280 since joining last year and have made major inroads on the first page.

As long as they don't stay for more than 180 days, I think they will be just fine. The biggest danger of the Czech Republic, I think, is coming to terms with the fact that they are exceptionally good at making beer, and offer it up at a very reasonable price.

I'm not sure who this Professor Robertson is, is he really a Professor?

He's now retired. He was a Professor of Public Policy at Liverpool John Moores University. Organized some very prestigious chess tournaments in Liverpool in 2006-2008.

"Organized some very prestigious chess tournaments in Liverpool in 2006-2008."

Indeed, and had some rather entertaining arguments with the arbiters.

I thought it was a UK entry for Eurovision. But I suppose that could change to England in the future.
I can understand why Israel is allowed to enter but not Australia.

Australia did take part a few years ago, I'm sure?

As for Israel, they have been a member of the main European broadcasting organisation since at least the 1960s - that why they started entering.

Australia still do enter Eurovision but have been knocked out at the semi-final stage the last few years

From what I read in non English press, reaching the final thanks to a highly debatable penalty awarded to the home team did not make England particularly popular.
