Is there a style of music you like less than that stuff?
I was seven years old, gimme a break.

Anyway yes, I have listened to scraps from the Eurovision Song Contest. Dick James would have blown them away.

But the thread is really about which style of music you dislike the most. I said opera because I literally can't stand it although I accept the comments that you need to see it performed to comment.

Rap, hip-hop, drums 'n' bass - in short, anything devoid of melody, harmony or variety. And that form of jazz which has saxophones pretending to be hyperactive blow-flies ("scribble music", I call it).

Anything being played in a pub, bar, restaurant or cafe that's too bloody loud for ordinary conversation to be possible.

Any music on a film or TV soundtrack that tells you how you're supposed to feel about what's going on, or where the scene is set (accordions for France, mandolins for Italy, bouzoukis for Greece, etc, etc).

That's drum 'n' bass.

Drum and Bass has harmony in it. You should check the song Barcelona for that.

I have barely listened to music for the majority of my adult life but my opinion of rap music can be summarised by prefixing it with a c.

That is rather sad.

Old guys being performatively and belligerently ignorant about black music, very good look, a credit to our community

Give it a rest, Justin. We all know that much of the best "white" music over the past sixty years derives heavily from Blues and R&B. I am entitled to find little of merit in rap ( or indeed in LA Motown, a contradiction in terms ). I don't rate the Eurovision genre much either.

Given that you insist on presenting everything in racial terms, in which box do you put Memphis?

I just don't "get" rap - and with respect to Justin (who I often agree with) I don't see anything "performative" in that frankly.

(not least because there are certain "white" music genres which leave me equally unmoved)

No, I don't think I will. Predominantly black music comes up too often in these conversations and comes up too much in a certain way, to be comfortable with it.

Well yes, and I put it to you sir that we both know how that music was widely referred to before white people started playing it.

Maybe think about why some people need to make the very tiresome observation about putting a "c" in front of "rap" instead of just saying they don't like or understand it, which any of us might say about any genre.

There's a certain amount of history here under the general heading "how white people talk about black music (this being one example and this, say, being another) and it's proper and perhaps even important to ask why this happens. (Another recent example was a spectacularly unpleasant piece about grime in the Telegraph by Douglas Murray, who I think understands exactly what he is doing.) What does it tell us? In individual cases, maybe something, maybe nothing. But what does it tell us that it keeps happening?
