Hello.
Why has COVid 19 become so wide-spread in UK?

Indecisive and indifferent governance, an underfunded welfare system, and arrogance. The same as usual.

Why has it become so widespread everywhere else?

Lots of other countries have similar problems?

When the outbreak is over, lots of countries, perhaps including both the UK and Iran, will need to analyse whether they could have handled things better.

For the moment, I give thanks to Almighty God / Allah for every sufferer who recovers. It does now seem that our Prime Minister will be one of them.

Today's "technology" helps people transport very easily.
Travelling across a continent would take months 1000 years ago, now it takes a few hours.
Some people and governments refuse to quarantine for financial reasons and for joy.
This zoonotic virus was unknown at the beginning, so at first it was not taken seriously. Iranian authorities still think it might be a biological war  and perhaps not as serious as the flu.People and government had no notion of a pandemic , as the government changed in 1979, and the last pandemic was almost a century ago.
The outbreak was at the time of Chinese new year, with many travels there and many cruise trips.
Governments like Iran and US, was late to recognize it and reportedly even at first tried to suppress the news of its spread, fearing that it is the plot of the enemy to bring down the economy and reelection of the administrative body.
Sanction have almost crippled Iran's economy, and the people who could afford to go on a months-long strike during the 1979 revolution, cannot do that again, forced to go out for a living.
False news of quarantine caused people to gather at the door of supermarkets. Apartments contribute to the spread also. The apartment regions in my hometown, Shiraz, are the most risky now.
Public transport is also a contributor.
People need to avoid going out and gathering unnecessarily, and practice social distancing when out. This is the first step. All schools need to be closed, all organizations, factories, travels, public transport and places, etc.... Anything that lead to people gathering, contributing to the spread of the disease, which mostly transmits by droplets of mucus and saliva, either directly or indirectly via the touch of a contaminated surface and then touching the mouth or nose or a wound. It was enforced in China.

Nick, perhaps on Soheil’s threads putting sarcasm in brackets might be useful

Why sarcasm? People's hardship are no place for sarcasm.

Putting aside for a moment the serious issues which concern us all,  this thread has become an amusing study in human psychology:

1) Soheil, very reasonably, asks why the virus has become so widespread in the UK ( Despite being a late-starter, out of some 180 countries the UK appears to  already be 5th in the table of most lives lost).

2) Nick, with a hint of flippancy and sarcasm, asks why it has become so widespread everywhere else.

3) Matt then briefly answers Nick's  sarcastic comment by acting as though it were not sarcastic ( either deliberately or obliviously, I'm not sure which).

4) Soheil gives a more detailed answer to Nick's flippant and slightly sarcastic comment, by giving a detailed description of the situation in Iran.

5) Alan advises Nick to make it more clear to Soheil that he is being sarcastic.

6) Soheil criticises the 'sarcasm' which he hadn't noticed until seeing Alan's comment.

This exchange highlights a disadvantage of forums as opposed to real life exchanges when we can get cues from body language - such as people's expressions.

It was an "ironic" riposte to Nick's evident sarcasm.

You have missed out between 3) and 4):

3a) David, who normally keeps his religious beliefs to himself on here, decides that now is the time to allude to them.

Happy Easter to all, whether Christians, adherents of other faiths, or adherents of none.

To attempt to answer the original question it is either:

1. A lack of social discipline or

2. living in an open society

(depending on your point of view). After 20 days of going for our daily walk in the local park (about 200 metres away) I have noted that whereas 90% of people on the streets are careful in observing the 2m distancing rule (crossing the road or waiting in a side road or driveway) about 10% don't do this. They either haven't got the message or they don't believe in it. 10% could be doing a fair bit of virus spreading.

This thread?! I thought the whole forum was created by Carl with the sole purpose of gathering data for his psychology degree and his final dissertation about the behavior of grumpy old men when sitting in front of a keyboard :D

One that is not very effective in achieving the desired result?

(just as in chess, really)
