Week 37+

Although not able to finish the task I was brought in to achieve, I wish Watford all the best for their final two games. Cheers, Nigel Pearson on being sacked.

Can he maintain that gap? That was the question we asked about Paul Spiller in Week 36+. The answer was "No" as in Week 37+ we have a new leader as David Egginton scored a mind-blowing 93 points to take top spot for the first time this season. John Peters has emerged too as a challenger with 103 points , best score of the week and now within a dozen points of the overall lead. Meanwhile James Redburn had that sinking feeling with a low score for the week of 29 points.

1 Hope Springs David Egginton 93 2277
2 Brokeback Mount10 Paul Spiller 58 2275
3 Aimless Wanderers John Peters 103 2266
4 Sheep on Fire Adam Bremner 63 2257
5 Wijnaldum Leviosa Sam Herring 58 2252

Preview There will be a preview of Week 38+ for both Premier Chess and overall before play on the final day Sunday 26th with a 4.00pm kick-off in all fixtures.

Week 38+ preview

Just twenty five points separate the top five managers - add Thomas Evans in sixth place and barring some sensational score elsewhere these are the managers who will contest the top spot in Premier Chess this season. In 2016 the final destination was settled in the 93rd minute of the last match; could we see the same again this time? Paul Spiller and Sam Herring have contested the lead for many weeks but in Week 37+ David Egginton suddenly made a move whilst John Peters appeared from nowhere. The key factor may be the special chips left - Paul and Sam are out of options - whilst the other four contenders still have a Free Hit or Wild Card to play.

Many teams now have nothing to play for in the Premier League, Liverpool are home and dry and held the trophy aloft at Anfield; so will they field a strong team against Newcastle? Similarly Manchester City must have one eye on the Champions League so who will play in their last match against Norwich? With Kane, Sterling, Ings, Aubameyang, Vardy, Salah & Mané all looking for the golden boot or to reach 20 goals who is going to be left in?

Overall After being relegated to Page Two, Magnus Carlsen has made a dramatic comeback and now sits in 4th spot behind Chris McGowan. Here are the top scores overall at Week 37+

1 Aúpa Atleti Chris McGowan 63 2491
2 The Bulldozers Joshua Bull 62 2489
3 @TooGoodFPL (ABVD) Aleksandar Antonov 71 2482
4 MCT 50% mgfl.bass Magnus Carlsen 76 2479
5 mikey2001 Michael Murphy 79 2471

Again some teams have chips to play with the leader still holding a Triple Captain card. Choices become paramount - had Magnus selected Sterling as captain last week rather than Rashford, he would be in number 1 position now. As well as this there are plenty of other teams within distance so we await the results to see if the World's Number 1 chess player is Number 1 at Fantasy Football.

Week 38+

“They gave themselves too much to do in too short a time to do so." Luther Blissett (ex-Watford player)

David Egginton took the lead in Week 37 and held out against all challengers to become Premier Chess Fantasy Football Manager for 2019-20. His score of 67, whilst not exceptional, was sufficient to hold off all his challengers with Sam Herring on 80 points the only one to make ground but even then he was 16 points adrift as the gap, reported in Week 37+ of only two points, widened. Several players made only fleeting appearances and a good many sat on the bench for this last week. If you were fortunate enough to pick Manchester City players rather than Liverpool the points soon mounted - none more so than in Simon Brown's team with top shop score of 102 points. I am afraid to say down in the Bargain Basement was my team - despite having a bench boost card that yielded a magnificent six points, plus replacing Fernandes with Antonio and nominating Salah as captain - a less than magnificent 30 points was the result as I lost 350,000 places in one week!

Overall

On Week 38 Aleksandar Antonov (Bulgaria) who had been sitting in third place for the preceding three weeks swept past the first and second placed teams from Week 37+. His massive total of 93 points with De Bruyne (38 points) as captain meant that he finished some 18 points ahead of the second placed manager. Magnus Carlsen suffered the same fate as me with a minimal 40 points and over dependence on Messrs Salah and Antonio. He dropped from 4th to 11th spot. Overall scores are given below:-

1 @TooGoodFPL (ABVD) Aleksandar Antonov 93 2575
2 The Bulldozers Joshua Bull 68 2557
3 Aúpa Atleti Chris McGowan 58 2549
4 Martial Mata's LP Will Turner 81 2547
5 mikey2001 Michael Murphy 76 2547

Quarter Four Report - Weeks 30+ to 38+

When we took an enforced break at the end of Quarter Three, Paul Spiller and Sam Herring were setting the pace as they had been for some time. Their long time challenger Onos Kofi-Ofuafor disappeared after Week 32+ and Adam Bremner emerged as their main rival. Everything was to change in Week 37+; both Paul and Sam scored 58 points and suddenly David Egginton who had been occupying the lower places in the top five took top spot whilst John Peters with a score of 100+ appeared from nowhere. David's Week 38+ was unexceptional but none of his challengers could score sufficient points to overtake him and in fact the gap widened from the preceding week.

Here are the scores for the final quarter, as usual 5 points for a 1st place down to 1 for fifth - number of weeks in the top five in brackets with nine weeks maximum.

1. Paul Spiller 40 pts (9)
2. Sam Herring 31 pts (9)
3. Adam Bremner 24 pts (9)
4. David Egginton 17 pts (6)
5. Richard Beach 9 pts (5)
6. John Peters 6 pts (2)
7= Thomas Evans 5 pts (4)
7= Onos Kofi-Ofuafor 5 pts (3)

For reasons unclear - maybe they didn't fancy paying his fare from Bulgaria?
