I'm sure there are plenty worse. My bench to date has scored 177 points and I presume I could easily beat your 109. The nadir came in Week 14 when Todd Cantwell (on the bench) scored 8 points and my three midfielders on the pitch Sadio Mané, Adama Traoré and Youri Tielemans scored six points between them - that was the same week Tyrone Mings with 7 points could have replaced James Tarkowski on one point. However spare a thought for Nick London whose team has played 17 weeks without a goalkeeper. I asked Nick about this and he told me he had forgotten his password so Hart and Jakupovic (both played nil minutes so far) remain in situ.
On the topic of benched players I decided that Gazzaniga & Cathcart wouldn't be in my starting eleven today with the inevitable goalless draw between their teams and the added annoyance of a Gazzaniga penalty save
Jiminez hasn't done badly either
My starting eleven outscored my bench 35-34 despite the Vardy penalty miss.

My match week started with first goal of the day; Bednarek assisted by Ward-Prowse - both on my bench.

Week 23

I would have said a few years ago that I had no interest whatsoever in working abroad, but i'm more interested now Eddie Howe. Possibly because he is 4/5 to be the next Premier Manager to be sacked.

Week 23 was not high scoring as can be seen from the leading scores below - nevertheless no serious challenge has emerged for our top five for many game weeks now - the only certainty seems to be that Aguero is the most consistent choice for striker. Top scorer was Daniel Lambourne (courtesy of his Liverpool defenders) with 75 points; meanwhile Matt Parry's team "Excalibur was firmly stuck in stone with a minimal 19 points. The Premier League has sneaked in Game Week 24 starting tonight.

1 Wijnaldum Leviosa Sam Herring 37 1375
2 Brokeback Mount10 Paul Spiller 52 1343
3 Avin a Mair Jonathan Blackburn 32 1336
4 Salt & Pepe Onos Kofi-Ofuafor 46 1328
5 Hope Springs David Egginton 39 1325

Up for the Cup. As predicted our final three participants were roundly beaten in Week 23 so no more updates on progress here. Finally what of Magnus? He's now down in 224th place.

Week 24

I wish we could have done better but I’ll take it. Jurgen Klopp after Liverpool open a 19 point gap by beating West Ham.

It was the week to play your "Triple Captain" card with Liverpool having a double fixture. That was fine if you selected Mo Salah but not so if Sadio Mané who hobbled off after 30 minutes in the Reds first match versus Wolves. Leader Sam Herring selected Sadio Mané and scored a minimal three points whereas those who gave Salah the nod garnered 48 points. As a result the gap at the top narrowed and new challengers have emerged - namely Grant Bucher and Mark Leonard who enter the top five. There were no century makers but a number of managers hit the nineties - best was Phil Makepeace* who was top banana with 98 points; meanwhile the stewed prunes went to Dominic Rabbitte with 21 points assisted by a -3 from David Luiz.

1. Wijnaldum Leviosa Sam Herring 53 1424
2 Brokeback Mount10 Paul Spiller 77 1420
3 Salt & Pepe Onos Kofi-Ofuafor 65 1393
4 Olympique Mayonnaise Grant Bucher 88 1391
5 Aurier Vardy Mark Leonard 73 1389

Leader of the Pack Chris McGowan on 1611 pts with his team CholoKingAtMee? is currently in first place overall

*Amended after Phil's post before - Thomas Evans previously credited with 94 pts

In an otherwise terrible season, think you’ll find I notched 98, Neil. I know you have to scroll down a lot to find me. :)

And I thought I'd finally got a mention in this forum after several months of lying around the top 10-15...

I'll still make the claim of being the highest without using a chip :P

Week 25

"It was a big effort. It was a difficult game especially in the first half." Jordan Henderson - Liverpool go 22 points clear.

We have an unusual situation with four teams tying for fifth spot. There is obviously some sort of tie-break system in force but thankfully we don't need a play-off yet. In answer to Thomas's post, several of the top teams are yet to use any of their chips (notably Paul Spiller & Onos Kofi-Ofuafor) so I'm afraid his claim to be the highest placed chipless player has failed. Talking of failures, Nick London scored a mediocre 26 points as he slipped even further towards 79th and last spot with everyone now over the 1,000 point mark. Rob Ensor best of the week with 83 points. Finally GameWeek 26 includes the mid-season break so is extended to 17th February.

1 Wijnaldum Leviosa Sam Herring 73 1497
2 Brokeback Mount10 Paul Spiller 61 1481
3 Olympique Mayonnaise Grant Bucher 80 1471
4 Salt & Pepe Onos Kofi-Ofuafor 65 1454
5= Aurier Vardy Mark Leonard 54 1443
5= Hope Springs David Egginton 58 1443
5= The Beach Boys Richard Beach 59 1443
5= Pumbedita Pygargs Anthony Kent 72 1443

Finally Overall leader Chris McGowan is still in the lead - but his team name is now WhatsMoratawithLund?. Possibly he changes his team name ever week - so I'll have a look and report back.

Week 26

Rather short and late I'm afraid with no changes from last week although David Egginton has shaken off his pursuers for outright fifth. Kevin Williamson in the jet stream with 94 points whilst John Sargant was marooned in the doldrums with 39 points.

1 Wijnaldum Leviosa Sam Herring 64 1561
2 Brokeback Mount10 Paul Spiller 68 1549
3 Olympique Mayonnaise Grant Bucher 67 1538
4 Salt & Pepe Onos Kofi-Ofuafor 62 1516
5 Hope Springs David Egginton 65 1508

Not the World Champion A team with a manager Magnum Dong Carlsen has moved into 11th overall place. It's nothing to do with the World Champion whose current position isn't known.

Team name for Magnum Dong's team is (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ ♞ ♝ ♜.

I should have clarified that I meant in the gameweek, not overall :D

Week 27

One Premier League goal all season, and currently enduring a run of 22 consecutive top-flight games and 1,856 minutes without finding the net. Is this star striker in your team? Amuse yourselves by working out just who he is!

Most of the teams show a remarkable symmetry - so for example just nine points difference in the scores of the top five - and a swift examination of the table shows the vast majority of teams with similar results (possibly they've all got the same players?). Standing out was Tony Niccoli who scored 83 points whilst sitting back was John Wrench with 24 points - his magnificent defence and midfield (De Bruyne, van Dijk, Gomez etc) scoring a total of 10 points.

1 Wijnaldum Leviosa Sam Herring 61 1622
2 Brokeback Mount10 Paul Spiller 58 1603
3 Olympique Mayonnaise Grant Bucher 52 1590
4 Salt & Pepe Onos Kofi-Ofuafor 56 1572
5 The Beach Boys Richard Beach 59 1563

He's back!! Yes the real Magnus Carlsen is up to 38th spot - five weeks after falling to 494th. His score of 1735 still places him a long way behind current leader Chris McGowan on 1818 - and yes I can confirm Chris changes his team name every week.

Week 28

Last week's answer - was of course Joelinton Cássio Apolinário de Lira (commonly known as Joelinton) of Newcastle.
But he did help Newcastle into the Cup quarter-final this week with a couple of assists. :)

So this week all the managers who expected a Liverpool victory over Watford (which was mostly everyone) and selected Salah as captain were sadly disappointed. Liverpool were thumped and Watford's Sarr (selected by just 0.8%) was player of the week. Consequently a week of low scores. Paul Spiller was top, moving up to first place overall, with the high score of only 52 points whilst Nick London sinking in the opposite direction managed just 5 points.

1 Brokeback Mount10 Paul Spiller 52 1655
2 Wijnaldum Leviosa Sam Herring 29 1651
3 Olympique Mayonnaise Grant Bucher 28 1618
4 Salt & Pepe Onos Kofi-Ofuafor 42 1614
5 The Beach Boys Richard Beach 42 1605

Meanwhile Magnus Carlsen up to 21st overall - in the chess grandmaster league he leads Viktorija Cmilyte in 2nd place by a massive 148 points https://ratings.fide.com/profile/12801259

Week 29

"The idea is that there will be no competition possibly for many months." Reported from BBC Football Focus

1 Brokeback Mount10 Paul Spiller 60 1707
2 Wijnaldum Leviosa Sam Herring 53 1704
3 Olympique Mayonnaise Grant Bucher 63 1681
4 Salt & Pepe Onos Kofi-Ofuafor 64 1678
5 The Beach Boys Richard Beach 54 1655

We'll catch up on what's happening later! Possibly much later.

Quarter 3 Report - Weeks 20-29

As the Premier League conveniently finished at the 3/4 stage, we've time to catch up on performances in the third quarter. Premier Chess is developing into a two way battle between Samuel Herring and Paul Spiller. Long time leader Jonathan Blackburn has dropped back and is now well out of the running whilst Grant Bucher - famed for his late runs - has appeared to mount his challenge. Onos Kofi-Ofuafor has maintained his position in the top five scoring in every one of the ten weeks. It's hard to see any other managers emerging from the pack but only time will tell when, eventually, the season recommences.

1. Wijnaldum Leviosa Sam Herring 48 pts (10)
2. Brokeback Mount10 Paul Spiller 37 pts (10)
3. Salt & Pepe Onos Kofi-Ofuafor 18 pts (10)
4. Olympique Mayonnaise Grant Bucher 17 pts (6)
5. Avin a Mair Jonathan Blackburn 15 pts (4)
6. Hope Springs David Egginton 11 pts (6)
7. The Beach Boys Richard Beach 4 pts (4)
8. Aurier Vardy Mark Leonard 2 pts (2)
