Sorely the real story is that Magnus has advanced to ninth in a field of seven million players?

Week 16

Next Arsenal Manager?? 40-1 Arsene Wenger! Manuel Pellegrini is 1-6 to be the next Premier sacking.

We are now settling into a familiar pattern; the top five teams remain the same although Paul Spiller, with the week's best score of 96 has taken over top spot. Samuel Watts with 23 points the low point of the week.

1. Brokeback Mount10 Paul Spiller 96 996
2 Avin a Mair Jonathan Blackburn 70 985
3 Salt & Pepe Onos Kofi-Ofuafor 43 968
4 Wijnaldum Leviosa Sam Herring 70 955
5 Hope Springs David Egginton 64 943

Up for the Cup 53 points minimum was required for a place in this year's Cup. I scored 52  so I'm not even in the draw.

I'd like to put myself forward for the title of "worst manager ever", having dropped 109 points so far this season solely by leaving the wrong players on the bench.
blog inspired by Bronstein's book, but using my own games: http://200opengames.blogspot.co.uk/

Magnus now world No1...

https://twitter.com/MagnusCarlsen/statu ... 6946074624
The media are now picking this up https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/50817158

However as rightly pointed out by the Guardian, Magnus will move off the top spot after tonight's Palace v Brighton match.*

* Down to third I think.

I'm sure there are plenty worse. My bench to date has scored 177 points and I presume I could easily beat your 109. The nadir came in Week 14 when Todd Cantwell (on the bench) scored 8 points and my three midfielders on the pitch Sadio Mané, Adama Traoré and Youri Tielemans scored six points between them - that was the same week Tyrone Mings with 7 points could have replaced James Tarkowski on one point. However spare a thought for Nick London whose team has played 17 weeks without a goalkeeper. I asked Nick about this and he told me he had forgotten his password so Hart and Jakupovic (both played nil minutes so far) remain in situ.

Week 17

"The ambition of this football club is very clear. You have to fight for trophies and be in Europe. The rest is not good enough." Mikel Arteta at his press conference on being appointed new Arsenal manager.

The top five are drawing away - just like last season. In Week 6 there were 35 teams within 50 points of the leader; after 17 weeks just the top five remain. Gareth Carter was a late starter in Week 2; however with the week's top score of 85 he has now left four Week 1 teams in his wake. Also sinking is Adam Cranston who feel to the bottom with the low score of 33 points.

1 Brokeback Mount10 Paul Spiller 65 1061
2 Avin a Mair Jonathan Blackburn 65 1050
3 Wijnaldum Leviosa Sam Herring 72 1027
4 Salt & Pepe Onos Kofi-Ofuafor 48 1016
5 Hope Springs David Egginton 72 1015

League Closure Entries will be closing after this week so if you've got mates in other leagues please advise them that this is the last chance to enter Premier Chess.

Week 18

“Our goal is to try and play better football. These players have the quality to play better." Carlo Ancelotti at his first Everton press conference.

20 players have now exceeded the 1,000 points mark. In a week of comparatively low scores Sam Herring trawled in the top score of 63 points with Chris Davison on the same score. In the deep was Sabrina Chevannes with a low score of 21 points. When things go wrong they can go disastrously wrong - in joint 6,175,086th place for the week was Magnus Carlson with 26 points; a score that was bettered by all but four players in Premier Chess. The selection of Son Heung-Min as captain (-1 points doubled to -2) a major contributing factor after his red card against Chelsea. Magnus now down to 10th spot.

1 Brokeback Mount10 Paul Spiller 33 1094
2 Wijnaldum Leviosa Sam Herring 63 1090
3 Avin a Mair Jonathan Blackburn 40 1090
4 Hope Springs David Egginton 47 1062
5 Pumbedita Pygargs Anthony Kent 50 1054

Up for the Cup 21 teams from Premier Chess are in the Week 19 draw. By Week 23 our interest is normally ended so we'll see how we progress. Lowest team still in the draw is Barry Redburn's "Peregrinewellies. Of course the usual gamut of silly names has appeared - my favourite so far "Stranger Ings".

Week 19

"The advantage is too big. It's unrealistic to think about Liverpool" Pep Guardiola

Leaving Trent Alexander-Arnold on the bench was not a good idea as I backed Leicester to threaten Liverpool. David Egginton top scored with 81 points; Trent A-A firmly in place in his team whilst Gavin Carter was one of a number of players to take a three point deduction for Ederson when the City keeper was sent off after just twelve minutes to contribute to a minimal 24 points. At the half-way point only six points now separates the top four teams who look to be heading for scores of around 2,400 at the season's end. Can anyone stop them? - We'll find out soon enough!

1 Wijnaldum Leviosa Sam Herring 59 1149
2 Avin a Mair Jonathan Blackburn 58 1148
3 Brokeback Mount10 Paul Spiller 52 1146
4 Hope Springs David Egginton 81 1143
5 Salt & Pepe Onos Kofi-Ofuafor 63 1108

Up for the Cup 13 of 21 teams survived into the Week 20 draw. Best opponent name is Chiellino Con Carne which shows how uninspiring the rest are!

2nd Quarter Report - Weeks 11 to 19

The first quarter featured 19 teams who met the minimum requirement of two weeks in the top five places; as predicted just six teams featured in the 2nd quarter and their dominance is likely to continue into the second half of the season. Three captains - Paul Spiller, Onos Kofi-Ofuafor and Anthony Kent - have featured in both quarters whilst Sam Herring, Jonathan Blackburn and David Egginton are in the leading group for the first time.

1. Brokeback Mount10 Paul Spiller 39 pts (9)
2. Avin a Mair Jonathan Blackburn 38 pts (9)
3. Salt & Pepe Onos Kofi-Ofuafor 24 pts (8)
4. Wijnaldum Leviosa Sam Herring 22 pts (8)
5. Hope Springs David Egginton 8pts (6)
6. Pumbedita Pygargs Anthony Kent 4pts (4)

Week 20

"It feels great to be home. I loved being in this part of the world." David Moyes. Manuel Pelligrini sacked by West Ham - replaced by David Moyes.

In the ever revolving management roundabout back comes David Moyes at West Ham. Possibly there might be a short intermission to the sacking rota for a while now. Meanwhile in Premier Chess Sam Herring now has a 50 point gap to the 5th placed Onos Kofi-Ofuafor. There are still plenty of twists and turns especially with team rotation over the festive/New Year fixtures. Stuart Iles hit the heights with his 83 points whilst plumbing the depths with just 33 points were Paul Spiller & Gareth Yeo - a dramatic change of fortunes for both team managers on previous showings though Paul maintains his position in the top five.

1 Wijnaldum Leviosa Sam Herring 72 1221
2 Avin a Mair Jonathan Blackburn 57 1205
3 Hope Springs David Egginton 58 1201
4 Brokeback Mount10 Paul Spiller 33 1175
5 Salt & Pepe Onos Kofi-Ofuafor 63 1171

Up for the Cup Just nine Premier Chess managers remain. Sam Herring and David Egginton the top placed. What of Magnus Carlsen? Three disastrous weeks have seen the World Champion drop to 148th place - he now trails the leader by 70 points.

Week 21

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=146E60ZTLGY Worst penalty of 2019-20??

The top teams remain the same; in place for five of the past six weeks. It was one of those weeks where nobody did exceptionally well or badly. Several players scored in excess of 70 points - the best being Jon Tait & Alex Bullen on 77 points whilst Nick London was in last place on 25 points.

1 Wijnaldum Leviosa Sam Herring 64 1285
2 Avin a Mair Jonathan Blackburn 46 1251
3 Hope Springs David Egginton 38 1239
4 Brokeback Mount10 Paul Spiller 61 1236
5 Salt & Pepe Onos Kofi-Ofuafor 51 1222

Up for the Cup - Six teams remain captained by Sam Herring, Alex Sheerin. Adam Bremner, Samuel George and both James & Joe Friar.

Week 22

Here's another contender from 2019 for worst penalty https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-niqVw3wM2c.

There was no change in our resident top five but their scores enabled other teams to make progress. We have to look well down Page Two for the top score of the week of 91 points from Richard Dineley - just proving that doing nothing sometimes works - the original side from Week 1 still in place. It was no close shave for Dave Ledger's "Beard Hair" team with a minimal 28 points.

1 Wijnaldum Leviosa Sam Herring 53 1338
2 Avin a Mair Jonathan Blackburn 53 1304
3 Brokeback Mount10 Paul Spiller 55 1291
4 Hope Springs David Egginton 51 1290
5 Salt & Pepe Onos Kofi-Ofuafor 64 1286

Up for the Cup As we enter Week 23 just Joe Friar, Alex Sheerin and Samuel George remain in the draw. We normally draw the line at this time so can any of our teams reach Week 24?

On the topic of benched players I decided that Gazzaniga & Cathcart wouldn't be in my starting eleven today with the inevitable goalless draw between their teams and the added annoyance of a Gazzaniga penalty save
