Re: 2016 draw
A long hard season for Staffs I then being pressed into action as early as the National semi. Hopefully we will have a captain in place by then.

Oh good. Another quarter-final against an East Anglian team.
(Is there any chance that we could, one of these years, get a quarter-final against a team from M or S?)

If we could aim to finish 2nd in the South West it might help

S1 vs N1 in the Open Semi-Final?!
Is it really a great idea to publish a draw in advance of the completion of qualifying competitions when a draw like this could easily result in teams seeking to game the qualifying competitions to their advantage?

I might get shot for answering on here but I'll risk it.Richard Bates wrote:S1 vs N1 in the Open Semi-Final?!

In practical terms the deadline for unions to send nominations is 31st March. Some unions are very tight to the deadline, particularly if they have a vigorous union stage competition. Generally speaking most captains like to have some idea who they're playing by then so that they can start arranging venues, particularly those who have to play a preliminary match in April. We normally receive several complaints that the draw isn't confirmed as it is. At least the skeleton draw gives them an idea.
In terms of `gaming` the system unions are not obliged to nominate in any specific order anyway.

Re: 2016 draw
Judging by last year, there's even some chance that there won't be an N2
The byes in the quarter final are the more objectively worrying thing I'd have thought but its hardly obvious what to do about those.

I was told on Monday that it had been proposed to have a joint Lancs-Yorks teamMartinCarpenter wrote:Judging by last year, there's even some chance that there won't be an N2

Re: 2016 draw
You could then use a purely or mostly random draw and let the Unions give preferences to the teams in order of finishing. West of England teams might then get to play SCCU opposition.Andrew Zigmond wrote:

If there are 10 entrants to the Minor Counties and 6 to the Open, that suggests a little too much leeway is given as to which counties qualify as "Minor".

The only counties that can win the Open are Lancs, Yorks and the Southern counties - much as I would like to see Staffs win itRoger de Coverly wrote:If there are 10 entrants to the Minor Counties and 6 to the Open, that suggests a little too much leeway is given as to which counties qualify as "Minor".
What is happening now is that counties that can't win it - the MCCU, WECU & EACU counties - are entering the Minor instead and running competitions to qualify teams specifically for the Minor Counties
If you were to exclude counties, then the southern counties that don't make the Open and go in the Minor would be the ones - whether that's fair is another issue - alternatively, you could let all the SCCU counties go into the Open and then you would have quarter finals with 8 teams (5 SCCU, 2 NCCU and Staffs)

Re: 2016 draw
Unlikely though it may be we might be able to repeat our 1992 triumph one day. I think there's more chance of it happening than England winning a second world cup, but sadly not as likely as Tottenham winning a second league title based on the current league table.Mick Norris wrote: The only counties that can win the Open are Lancs, Yorks and the Southern counties - much as I would like to see Staffs win it
I notice that the ECF website no longer updates the winners of the county championship http://www.englishchess.org.uk/historic ... p-winners/

Sorry to be a pedant, but Spurs already have two league wins

Ummm, yes, that's an 'interesting' sort of idea Yes, Yorkshire have tons of the sort of spare lower/mid board players Lancs would need to bulk their team out but really?!Mick Norris wrote:I was told on Monday that it had been proposed to have a joint Lancs-Yorks teamMartinCarpenter wrote:Judging by last year, there's even some chance that there won't be an N2
It'd be rather more logical on an a priori basis to go joint Lancashire/Manchester for the Open. Goodness, you're all cooperating quite nicely in the 4NCL and there's about a century of historical precedent.
Unfortunately, of course, the politics would make even a joint Yorks/Lancs affair look trivial to arrange!

Oops, that will teach me to base my info on a "61, never again" chant I have a feeling that it may well be three at the end of this season.Matt Mackenzie wrote:Sorry to be a pedant, but Spurs already have two league wins
