Well done Neil, is that the biggest of your 3 wins against them this campaign?

Hi Mick,

That was our best win against them this season (the other two being 9 - 7 and 8.5 - 7.5) not because the average of their July '13 grades was exactly 180, nor even because they included a grandmaster (all credit to Mark Hebden for immediately accepting the offered draw when Alex P had just 12 seconds left (Alex had R+p v Mark's R)), but mainly because after the first hour or so we appeared to be in real trouble (it was painful viewing at that point), especially on the lower boards.

I don't think Leicestershire (a very fair and sporting team) will disagree when I say some of their players failed to convert their superior positions into wins, but equally our lads showed lots of fight and spirit. Having already beaten them twice this season, it would have been pretty cruel on us had we lost today.

Today I discovered just how stressful it is to watch your team for 4 hours. I don't know how Neil does it.

Well, if Mark had not accepted, Alex would presumably have immediately claimed a draw under the two-minute rule, and that would have been an obvious and trivial "claim accepted" decision.

Yes, nevertheless I wanted to highlight what a gentleman Mark is, especially in light of Alex having recently defeated Mark in the final round of the Nottingham Congress; Mark must had felt frustrated after having had the superior position, but he didn't show it at all.

I most sincerely apologise for reporting something positive on the forum. I'll try not to do it again :)

Seriously though, at your 'professional' level Jack most players would rightly expect nothing less from Mark, but in the lowly amateur 'pub player' world I inhabit I've seen several players in clearly inferior positions turn down draws and deliberately play to win on time as their opponent doesn't realise (or has forgotten) that they can claim a draw.

A reasonable reflection on the match, too. The Minor Final between Suffolk v Nottinghamshire should be very well contested.

Hope none of the 9-7 scorelines anywhere become subject to random 'accidents'....

Close matches the pair of Yorkshire ones. It took a long time to get any complete games, and definitely to finalise things.

Just seen that 12-0 historical score that Middlesex have vs Yorkshire on the ECF website! I know Yorkshire often fairly badly organised in the K/O stages but that does seem a bit over the top :) Reasonable chances to improve it slightly this time round you'd think.

Where on the ECF site did you read that?
