Well done in managing to reschedule your match.
Not always easy to get these things played...the challenges of chess are many fold

It was our opponents that requested a match reschedule - not us.

No criticism intended Neil, but good to see some flexibilty with arrangements, that helps to get these fixtures played at a difficult time of the season, and avoids undesired defaults, etc.

Yorkshire have conceded their U-180 match to Essex by default. Obviously the £100 fine has had little effect; Yorkshire conceded at the same stage of the competition last year (to Kent).

Only five teams appear to have been prepared to play.

From the SCCU website
Quarter-finals (A) M1 (Warwicks) v bye S3 Kent Middx Sussex (Kent, Middx and Sussex decline nomination. Herts, who did not play in the U180 at the Union stage, were then invited but said no. This exhausts the possibilities and there is no S3); (B) Yorks (N1) v Essex (S2); (C) Surrey (S1) 9 7 Lancs (N2); (D) Devon (W) v bye
Semi-finals Devon (W) v Warwicks (M1); Winner of (B) v Surrey (S1)
Essex are also in the Minor Counties and Surrey in the Championship. They are presumably confident they have enough players of the required strength.

I guess that something similar might have happened to the Notts v Herts U140 match, if an alternative match date could not have been agreed.
Certainly Yorks would not have taken this decision lightly, and the £100 fine is not really sensible, unless some county captains are just messing around.
Wonder if they considered playing a restricted match over 12 boards, just to get this played...
Things are not helped by this being the time when clubs are winding down for summer after a long league season....and, of course, the youngsters are now busy swatting for exams, etc...

Alex's belief that applying disproportionate penalties will concentrate minds (and player availability) for the better is unshakeable, notwithstanding the evidence to the contrary. We can only hope that of the matches that do go ahead, this year none of the results will be overturned afterwards by virtue of an inadvertent infringement of the ECF membership rule.

No results will be overturned because of ECF membership infringements - this year there is no points penalty for playing an unregistered player, the penalty is £10 per player who is not a member. According to the Essex website, Yorkshire's Under 180 captain resigned because of a clash with his commitments to junior training and they were unable to raise a team.

Wouldn't this clash of commitments have been known at the time that the nomination was accepted? The date of the quarter finals certainly would have been.

So it's another Leics-Notts match (third time this season). Notts beat Manchester (Notts also won the U120 match v Lancs held at the same venue in Newcastle).

Yorkshire had achieved a winning 8 1/2 - 6 1/2 lead against Essex in the U160 quarter final by the time I left Syston today.

Something of a classic day; arrived at Bushey at 12.30 for a 2.00 start, so went for a quick lunch at local hostelry. My colleague Paul said, Leicestershire won't be all that strong will they, it's not a very big county? So I replied, yes but they won the county championship about 25 years ago - when they had Hebden playing.

We get slightly lost on the way back, turn up at 2.05 only to find ourselves 25 mins down - turns out the match was supposed to start at 1.00 ...presumably the Leicester guys gave us some leeway due to the mix up.

Then we see board 1 for Leics is none other than Mr Hebden. On the whole the result wasn't so bad and luckily the M25 was quiet, and we caught the last few mins of the cup final in a pub back in Sussex.

Well done Leics, sporting and friendly opponents, and good luck in later rounds.
