National stages 2020

Post by Mick Norris » Tue Nov 05, 2019 8:50 am

25th April Preliminary Round
9th May Quarter Final (Open, Minor, U160 and U120)
16th May Quarter Final (U180, U140 and U100)
13th June Semi Finals
4th July Finals
ECF CC Rules 2019 20_.pdf
(177.12 KiB) Downloaded 183 times
main changes are to time controls, role of match captain, beneficiary of default fines and authorised opt out of Finals Day at the time of entry. We have added some clarity to use of intermediate venues in the knockout rounds and highlighted that permissions are required of the National Controller irrespective of Union controller clearance

So four of the Quarter Finals, including the Open, are over the Bank Holiday weekend and hence clash with the 4NCL. Not great.

I wonder if those dates were chosen before the May bank holiday dates changed :?

I suspect so; I've emailed the Controller to suggest they are changed

Ok, obvious issue if you bring the date back to 2 May is that the Preliminary round is the week before, so that won't work; you'd also have a clash with the English Senior Championship, and some other events

Not easy unless you shunt them all to 16 May and have all on the same weekend like it used to be

The defaults dates for the Counties Championship are set according to a well-established pre-set formula to give certainty to participants and organisers of other events. Given that there is a significant body of chess players that support both the Counties Championships and the 4NCL I am however consulting with the Unions on a proposal to utilise a combination of the 25th April and 16th May (dates already earmarked for the Counties Championship) as default dates for the sections affected depending on whether any particular quarter final in the Open, Minor, U160 and U120 is affected by a preliminary round match. A deadline for responses of 16th November has been set to allow for consultation with participating/member Counties. Mark Murrell, ECF Controller Counties Championship

Unfortunately, the government didn't take the County Championship dates into consideration when it moved the Bank Holiday.

By the nature of the competitions, would that not be mostly the Open, Minor and to an extent the U180?

In recent years, the Open has struggled to get beyond six entrants, so that's an obvious candidate to be moved to the earlier date.

Bring back Bonar Law! It's not as if they didn't have warning of the anniversary of VE-Day...

On the bright side, it looks like the semi-finals are not clashing directly with an England game during the football Euro 2020; England play at Wembley on Sunday 14 June, and although kick off times haven't been released, I assume an evening kick off with earlier games in Bucharest and Amsterdam that day

As for Finals day, If England reach the quarter finals, they either play Friday 3 July in St Petersburg, or Saturday 4 July in Rome, kick off 8 pm UK time I think

Not quite true; they could be in either of the other quarter-finals if they get through as a best third-placed team.

If I were English then I wouldn't be worrying about anything beyond the group stages.

Well, I am, but as I am from a very minor county the chances of a clash are extremely unlikely
