National Stages 2019

Post by Mick Norris » Fri Mar 22, 2019 2:11 pm

From what I can see, the SCCU position is:

Open Surrey Middlesex Sussex
Minor Counties Essex
u180 Middlesex Essex
u160 Middlesex Essex
u140 Kent Hertfordshire Essex
u120 Essex Hertfordshire Surrey
u100 Essex Berkshire

The MCCU position appears to be:

Open Leics, G Man
Minor Counties Lincs, Notts
u180 Warks, Worcs
u160 G Man, Notts
u140 Worcs, Notts, Leics
u120 Notts, Staffs, Derbys
u100 Warks, Staffs, Notts (Reserve)

Not sure about the other Unions

Please, take care the SCCU list is still provisional!
There are likely to be some last minute updates before I submit the final list to the ECF National Controller

Full list of nominations is now published on the County Championship page of the ECF website.
https://www.englishchess.org.uk/county- ... hips-2019/

The draw will be published there by 1st April, possibly on Thursday 27th March or shortly afterwards.

Good luck to all the teams playing this weekend

The Open match between G Man and Sussex tomorrow was reduced to 12 boards by mutual agreement, but Sussex can only find 10 players

The U160 match between G Man and Suffolk is on Sunday

It doesn't seem a great weekend to choose to play to be honest; we're missing players at Rhyl (and maybe Harrogate for all I know) and because of the football on Sunday

That is a sad state of affairs for an Open team, and I don't expect that it is the captain's fault. I wonder how many of his players couldn't face another run up the M1 so soon after last weekend's 4NCL.

Strangely not the M1 as they agreed to play near Birmingham, which surprised me

Sussex to Daventry, Telford or Birmingham is likely to be M23/M25/M40 rather than M23/M25/M1 if you go clockwise round London. Still the same Motorway trek as last weekend though.

You knew when you entered that you would be expected to play a Quarter Final on Saturday 11th May. Football on Sunday 12th May is a red herring.

Rhyl and Harrogate also knew the date, or should have done, when they arranged their congresses to clash.

Things are unlikely to change unless and until the ECF is prepared to protect its flagship competition by stipulating that conflicting events not specifically approved will not be eligible for grading.

Yes we did David and we have had the same problem for years
I was told that we booked Syston today but somehow it got double booked and moved to tomorrow which means some of the team can't play
I am coming round to the idea of changing back to the system of playing the final stages in the Autumn

I've played at Rhyl in the past and am not eligible to play for any county participating in the national stages. I don't think applying sanctions would achieve anything other than annoy the event organisers and threaten the viability of the events. I think there are good reasons why people might choose a congress instead of a county match, but others on this forum have also stated that they prefer county chess to 4NCL, so the more chess factor can be countered by the greater time demanded. Important to fully understand these factors and the extent of the overlap of players before rushing to any draconian measures.
