Re: EUROPEAN WOMEN’S INDIVIDUAL CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP 2016
Ketevan Arakhamia-Grant (representing Scotland) is in 4th place on 5/7, half a point behind the joint leaders. 11 rounds in total. Ketevan has three wins and four draws, with a TPR of 2552 so far. She drew against Stefanova with Black in round 4 and plays Monika Socko with Black in round 8.
The number of players in each score group is frightening (though to be expected for a Swiss with 112 players - the Open equivalent had about 200 players) :
2 players on 5.5/7.
14 players on 5/7.
16 players on 4.5/7.
12 players on 4/7.
27 players on 3.5/7.
15 players on 3/7.
11 players on 2.5/7.
9 players on 2/7.
2 players on 1.5/7.
3 players on 1/7.
1 player on 0/7.
Interesting that it is being held in Romania.
Place called Mamaia (Romanian Black Sea resort).
Wonder if the competitors are enjoying the (hopefully nice) weather?

Jovanka has drawn again, both players were short of time before move 30

A shame, another nice game that she couldn't quite finish off, around move 25 seemed to be the critical stage.Mick Norris wrote:Jovanka has drawn again, both players were short of time before move 30

Houska, Jovanka vs Hoolt, Sarah
She had used well over an hour by then, if the times on chess24live can be trusted, and it is suggested that 25 f4 was the move to play

Re: EUROPEAN WOMEN’S INDIVIDUAL CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP 2016
Jovanka has 32 moves left to win a Q+KvR+K ending. They entered the ending at move 70 (when Black had a win in 28 moves) and have reached move 90 now (moves played as I speak). Still 22 moves with optimum defence according to the tablebases.
EDIT: Looks like Jovanka will win easily now. At what level does this ending become trivial to win?

A win in 102 moves, never in doubtChristopher Kreuzer wrote:Jovanka has 32 moves left to win a Q+KvR+K ending. I'm not sure it is trivial at any level based on past performances, will depend on how tired the players are as well as knowledge and understandingChristopher Kreuzer wrote:EDIT: Looks like Jovanka will win easily now. At what level does this ending become trivial to win?
Good news is that Jovanka and Meri both won, let's hope they can do the same tomorrow

I think after playing for so many moves and especially towards the end of a tournament it can only be considered trivial once you see the sequence of checks that win the rook or maybe not until the ending of the sequence.Mick Norris wrote:I'm not sure it is trivial at any level based on past performances, will depend on how tired the players are as well as knowledge and understandingChristopher Kreuzer wrote:EDIT: Looks like Jovanka will win easily now. Sure, but the knowledge that the eventual win is based on one or more of the following should be trivial:LawrenceCooper wrote:I think after playing for so many moves and especially towards the end of a tournament it can only be considered trivial once you see the sequence of checks that win the rook or maybe not until the ending of the sequence.Mick Norris wrote:I'm not sure it is trivial at any level based on past performances, will depend on how tired the players are as well as knowledge and understandingChristopher Kreuzer wrote:EDIT: Looks like Jovanka will win easily now. (i) pinning the rook and winning it with king and queen
(ii) setting up a mating net with king and queen
(iii) forcing the rook away to where it can be won with checks
What is less clear is why some of the optimum defences last as long as they do, and whether it is possible for the player with the rook to remember some basic principles that may (if the player with the queen slips) drag things out long enough for a 50-move draw claim. I guess there are some stalemate traps as well.

A quick draw on board 1 whilst the board 6 game caught my eye: 1 d4 f5 2. c4 g6 3. h4 Nf6 4. h5 Nxh5 5. Rxh5 gxh5 6. e4 d6 7. Qxh5+ Kd7
