European Women's Championship 2015

Post by Chris Rice » Thu May 07, 2015 6:56 am

The European Women's Championship 2015 is due to take place in Chakvi, Georgia from 18-31 May 2015. 99 players have so far been entered led by the home town favourite Nana Dzagnidze Nana (2570). Further down the list we have some British interest as Ketevan Arakhamia-Grant represents Scotland. Of course, she is from originally from Georgia so she should feel right at home. Quite a few of the women play in the 4ncl so will also be very familiar names. The second seed is Anna Muzychuk but her sister Mariya, the FIDE world champion is not on the list.

Astonishing pictures from the venue of this tournament. The area around it is a building site.

Anyway the draw for Round 1 is up and Keti's got a comfortable pairing to start with:

Board 27 GM Arakhamia-Grant Ketevan SCO 2393 0 0 Kuchava Ana GEO 2135

Rest of the draw is here:

Ketevan winning the R and P ending ( move 55). Not easy though.

Looking drawish now {move 66) with Black's chances of perpetual check.

Round 1 results: http://chess-results.com/tnr164130.aspx ... =30&wi=821

Notable results were the second seed's fortunate escape with a draw and wins against seeding on boards 21, 23, 36, 37.

Round 2 pairings:

Ketevan was fortunate to get a draw today in a difficult position.

Is this a qualifier for the World cup, and if so how many places are on offer?
Any postings on here represent my personal views

Only three have played in recent years (Paehtz, Stefanova and Keti) so not too many. Top women's chess in Europe seems even more concentrated in Eastern Europe/former Soviet territories than the mens!

When I wrote that Jon I was also thinking of Anastasia Savina who played one weekend for the Jutes in 2013. She is good mates with Liz Paehtz. She drew on the Saturday but on the Sunday she played this long theoretical line in the Grunfeld against Simon Knott (link below to game should you be interested) and lost. Unfortunately, she lost today as well so remains on 2/3 and was close to getting paired with Keti in round 4.

Other connections to England include Mihaela Sandu (3/3!) and Deimante Daulyte who have played in the women's all-play-alls at the London Chess Classic, the latter winning in 2012. Sopiko Guramishvili was also at the Classic last year, playing in the open and supporting her boyfriend Anish Giri.

I'm not sure about the World Cup, Mick, but, having just helped Liz write a piece on the event, I can confirm that there are 14 qualifying places available for the next Women's World Championship.
