It seems like a stupid question but I can't find the answer anywhere so the forum is the right place:

The rapid tournaments at the British are they FIDE rated or "just" ECF rated?

They have both been registered for FIDE rating:

She's been upgraded or wild-carded in for this year, facing Mike Yeo in the first round.

In the new grading list Akshaya is only four points behind Sarah, so would have already been a serious contender this year.
I am delighted to see that Akshaya Kalaiyalahan is now playing this year, with an outside chance to break Elaine Saunders's 1939 record as the youngest ever women's champion.

Elaine lost her record to Humpy Koneru in Street in, I think, 2000.

Akshaya would beat her record too, if successful. There is certainly a reasonable chance of this happening.

Maria Wang takes the lead in the Women's Championship, achieving quite an upset with the Black pieces overturning a 338 point disadvantage. Megan Owens also scored a draw against a much higher rated opponent.

The latter result is the more noteworthy, given that Dufus made a good impression at Hastings.

Sarah Hegarty (2.5) in the lead by half a point from Akshaya Kalaiyalahan (2) after round 5:

Congratulations to both Sarah Hegarty and Akshaya Kalaiyalahan! Akshaya also won the U12 (!) title today.

I must confess at never having heard of her before - how good do people think she could become?

I don't know, but she was certainly an important member of Surrey's County Championship winning side.

See http://englishchess.org.uk/ecfgrading.o ... peed=S#top and look at the last group of results.

She's England's highest rated female player under twenty-one and amongst the many events she has played in: http://www.londonchessclassic.com/2012/ ... tional.htm

I wouldn't want to put any pressure on her by predicting how good she could become but I'm looking forward to following her progress.

Haha - thanks for pointing me to this - all I heard about their match against Yorkshire was that "Ihor (Lewyk) grovelled a draw with a little girl"!

Now that story makes sense!
