Re: British Championships
It seems like a stupid question but I can't find the answer anywhere so the forum is the right place:
The rapid tournaments at the British are they FIDE rated or "just" ECF rated?

She's been upgraded or wild-carded in for this year, facing Mike Yeo in the first round.LawrenceCooper wrote:I am looking forward to the year when Akshaya first plays the Championship though, I suspect rather more than her opponents

I am delighted to see that Akshaya Kalaiyalahan is now playing this year, with an outside chance to break Elaine Saunders's 1939 record as the youngest ever women's champion.Leonard Barden wrote:In the new grading list Akshaya is only four points behind Sarah, so would have already been a serious contender this year.LawrenceCooper wrote:I am looking forward to the year when Akshaya first plays the Championship though, I suspect rather more than her opponents

Akshaya would beat her record too, if successful. There is certainly a reasonable chance of this happening.

Maria Wang takes the lead in the Women's Championship, achieving quite an upset with the Black pieces overturning a 338 point disadvantage. Megan Owens also scored a draw against a much higher rated opponent.

The latter result is the more noteworthy, given that Dufus made a good impression at Hastings.Andrew Bak wrote:Maria Wang takes the lead in the Women's Championship, achieving quite an upset with the Black pieces overturning a 338 point disadvantage. Congratulations to both Sarah Hegarty and Akshaya Kalaiyalahan! Akshaya also won the U12 (!) title today.
I must confess at never having heard of her before - how good do people think she could become?

I don't know, but she was certainly an important member of Surrey's County Championship winning side.Andrew Bak wrote:Congratulations to both Sarah Hegarty and Akshaya Kalaiyalahan! Akshaya also won the U12 (!) title today.

She's England's highest rated female player under twenty-one and amongst the many events she has played in: http://www.londonchessclassic.com/2012/ ... tional.htmAndrew Bak wrote:Congratulations to both Sarah Hegarty and Akshaya Kalaiyalahan! Akshaya also won the U12 (!) title today.

I wouldn't want to put any pressure on her by predicting how good she could become but I'm looking forward to following her progress.

Haha - thanks for pointing me to this - all I heard about their match against Yorkshire was that "Ihor (Lewyk) grovelled a draw with a little girl"!David Sedgwick wrote:I don't know, but she was certainly an important member of Surrey's County Championship winning side.Andrew Bak wrote:Congratulations to both Sarah Hegarty and Akshaya Kalaiyalahan!
