Hard to answer this, Nick, without knowing whether you perceive those "best efforts" as being directed at Baroness Hale personally or at all female judges/barristers. It is certainly true, for example, that Lady Hale (as she then was) was only the fourth woman to be appointed to the UK Supreme Court.

This is well out of date; the 'male establishment' has been making strenuous efforts to get more women on the bench for some time.

I probably made my point too obscurely.

If there is a male establishment keeping women out of important legal decisions then, in the particular case of Brenda Hale, they did a pretty poor job of it.

Corrected. I should have said "one of only four women", along with Lady Black, Lady Arden and Lady Rose.
