Pert, Nina 1537 - WIM Dragomirescu, Angela 2233 1 - 0

Was quite a result!

12-year-old Nina so far has 2.5/4, which besides the above result also includes a win against a 2050 WFM and a draw against a 2250 WGM. Her 2.5 points are five times as many as the rest of her team put together.....

Amy Hoare defeating former world champion grandmaster Anna Ushenina is worth a mention too.

The top two from each group advance to the final being held tomorrow and Tuesday.
Were the groups of notionally equal strength, like the Olympiads of 1974 and earlier?

They were certainly seeded to be. The use of FIDE standard play ratings for a 15/5 event will lead to some fluctuations but was probably done to ensure virtually all players would have one. Most of the matches I was involved with went with seeding, in Group B as second seeds we lost a crucial match to the third seed but the other six matches went with seeding. My other team in that pool beat the sixth seed (as seventh seeds) and drew with the eighth seed. In Group C my team (as fourth seed) had one accident against the seven seeds (when a heavy win seemed likely until the closing minutes/seconds) but the other six went with seeding. The Group D team had slightly more variable results, beating one seed above them and dropping three points to those below them.

Feedback from my players has been positive, even from those who had a tough time. It was certainly a great experience to be facing players of the calibre of the Muzychuk sisters (0/3), Ushenina (Amy beat her!), Pogonina (draw for Jovanka), Gunina, Girya etc
