International Round Up 11/8/09

British Chess Championships 2009
http://www.britishchess09.com/results_pairings.htm

Congratulations to David Howell who won the 2009 British with 9/11. David also wins the Tony Miles English Championship 2009 and the British Under 18 and U21 titles. Second place was shared between Mark Hebden & Simon Williams with 8.5, Richard Palliser finished 4th with 8/11 and Stuart Conquest and Danny Gormally finished with 7.5. Jovanka Houska retained the womens title scoring 6/11, ahead of Susan Lalic on 5.5, Sarah Hegarty on 4.5 and Sheila Dines on 3. Sarah was the highest placed Under 21 girl and Sheila won the Under 18 girls.
Congratulations to David Eggleston on his third and final IM norm and also to Jonathan Hawkins on his first. Both players achieved 10 round norms. My understanding is that David must now achieve a 2400 rating for the IM title.

Howard Staunton Memorial Tournament '09

http://www.2seeitlive.com/viewer_registration.php

This year's Staunton tournament started on Saturday 8th August, just a day after the end of the British. The Scheveningen event features two teams of five with England facing Netherlands in a double round format. England are represented by Adams, Short, McShane, Howell and Jones. I believe this to be the first time that our top four players have played together for an England team. I hope this will happen soon in an Olympiad or European Team.
The all play all event features five English and 5 foreign players. Lawrence Trent will be our GM norm hope whilst Terence Chapman will be trying for an IM norm. Simon Williams and Peter Wells also play, just a day after finishing the British and the fifth English player is Nigel Davies.
Live coverage is being offered for the first time and requires payment of £5 for online registration. So far the coverage appears to have worked okay, with the welcome addition of the all-play-all games from round 2 onwards. The system does seem to have a problem with credit cards though and I eventually had to pay by paypal. I would recommend anyone else looking to register does the same.
