Ivan Savvidi's Group of Companies (Greece).

Quite a colourful sponsor lined up for future FIDE events.

Whoever decides the content of the FIDE website is keen on promoting the idea of conflict.

This piece from three weeks ago
http://www.fide.com/component/content/a ... board.html
keeps getting promoted to the top spot, now being above the regular announcement of the most recent ratings.

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned elsewhere, but election related emails are starting to be received by Federations.
On the 11th April an email was sent to all Federations requesting links to Facebook pages, twitter accounts and other social media addresses of the Federation, President and Delegate. It included the somewhat ominous line
We would like to share with you FIDE news and also check and promote chess related news which is published by your federation and officials.
(NB bolding is mine)
The PNGCF declined this request.

A few days ago 'FIDE Forward' sent what I assume will be the first of many campaign letters from Makropoulos to the PNGCF. While it is genuine, it certainly could be read as satire, especially where he tries to treat his 22 years of experience as a reason for being elected, while not a reason to hold him accountable for his role in Kirsan's Presidency.

This as I recall was roughly Ignatius Leong's pitch.
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

That seems to be Malcolm Pein's line as well

It seems to me that whatever has gone before, and many of the incumbents in FIDE bear a great responsibility for supporting Ilyumzhinov over the years, the priority now must be to get rid of him and only then can the organisation be reformed.
Nigel Short on the other hand would like a complete clear out

Whatever Makro's faults, his only role in the bank account debacle has been that he was reluctant to organise a formal process to remove the President from his post prior to its natural occurrence in October. It could have been done but would have been very messy and expensive, so you can see both sides of that argument.

Would he indeed. Maybe he could stand himself and give us all a laugh.

And was very harshly criticised by many, including Makro himself at a meeting I was present at in Chennai in 2013. Indeed the majority of the FIDE presentation (to a number of Asian Federations) consisted of telling us how awful Igantius had been for all these years (including taking advantage of poor Kirsan), but fortunately his reign of terror was now past.
I sense a pattern here ...

It would take, what, someone with a free day or two and an Internet connection to find most of that for themselves by typing stuff into Google?

Apparently Nigel Short will be standing to be FIDE President.

Peter Doggers in a tweet: "Just had a long phone call with the third candidate for FIDE President, to be announced soon."
Yes, I've heard there will be an Official Monster Raving Loony Party candidate. I shan't spoil the surprise.
Probably a new thread should now be created, since NS would not wish to be considered a FIDE insider.

Hhmm. Issues. Malcolm Pein is, I understand, on Makro's slate

Over to the all-wise ECF Board.

And, of course, to the all-wise Forum :D

[later: just discovered]

One issue is that Short will be seeking the endorsement of the English Chess Federation, which now has IM Malcolm Pein as its delegate. Pein and Short got along fine, but recent developments suggest a potential clash. Pein, who is also the organizer of the London Chess Classic, has been quite close with Makropoulos in the last few months and helped FIDE to get the Saudi Chess Federation to host the World Rapid and Blitz Championship in December 2017. "It is strongly rumored that Malcolm Pein will be Makro’s deputy," said Short. "I’ve known Malcolm since 1973. He is a friend of mine. He has done a lot of good things for chess. But I think he views getting in bed [with] Makro as his route to the FIDE presidency. My view is that Makro has been, if not the main problem, certainly absolutely instrumental in the rottenness with FIDE. He's been the enabler, the facilitator for Kirsan." (Chess.com)

With Kasparov as his deputy I would hope ...
Ah, but I was so much older then. I'm younger than that now.
