FIDE insiders continue the fight.

http://www.fide.com/component/content/a ... -2018.html

Most of the newspaper reports of the Treasurer's letter stated that FIDE's bank account had been frozen. That's jumping the gun a bit as the closure now seems scheduled for April 30th.

Nigel is unimpressed.

FIDE is imminently threatened with the loss of all its banking facilities, due to the dubious friends that FIDE's President has made and continues to make. Call me ridiculously old-fashioned and idealistic, but is this not the type of situation in which a President for Life apologises for his mistakes, resigns with good grace (and any well laundered brown envelopes) and disappears from public view, leaving behind a loyal place-man to take his former position?

The loyal place-man bit is in place, finding "resigns" on the other hand isn't.

He was even more unimpressed by his loss on time to an 11-year-old after he (Nigel) forgot to press his clock...

(Bangkok Open 2018, Nigel currently on 3.5/5)

Strictly, do the Laws even permit you to do so?
I've started a new thread. I don't think the Laws prevent you from moving although with increments you still want the clock to be pressed.

I believe it is a fundamental principle that if your opponent moves before you have pressed your clock you are still entitled to do so and your opponent must then press back. It ensures that after each move there is aways an opportunity for the flag to fall.

KIrsan appears to be trying to retain his Presidency despite the absence of many of his previous supporters.

Well spotted. It is notable that none of his team has any identifiable connection with chess, except that the putative Treasurer has a FIN but has never done anything with it.

The "second division" contains some better known names.
According to Ilyumzhinov's application, Vice-President of the Chess Federation of Azerbaijan Mahir Mammedov (Azerbaijan), Vice-President of the Armenian Chess Federation Smbat Lputian (Armenia), and President of the Chinese Chess Association Yang Junan (China) have become nominated Vice-Presidents.

Former chief Treasurer of FIDE Willy Icklicki (Belgium) is announced as Executive Director, while former press secretary of the Asian Chess Federation Philip Alimo (Ghana) - as Press Officer.
Malcolm would have the ECF rally behind the defectors.
It seems to me that whatever has gone before, and many of the incumbents in FIDE bear a great responsibility for supporting Ilyumzhinov over the years, the priority now must be to get rid of him and only then can the organisation be reformed.

Peter Doggers in a tweet: "Just had a long phone call with the third candidate for FIDE President, to be announced soon."

Yes, I've heard there will be an Official Monster Raving Loony Party candidate. I shan't spoil the surprise.

UBS should have pulled the plug yesterday but no mention of whether it has or has not happened so far on the FIDE web site.

Shaun Press noted that FIDE were asking not to be sent money to the UBS account.
