New England number one

Post by Peter Shaw » Tue Mar 13, 2018 12:15 pm

Just noticed that David Howell has overtaken Mickey Adams in the live rating list after the last Bundesliga weekend, it must be a long time since there was anyone other than Adams was number one.

Yes, he overtook him on Saturday and stayed there after the results on Sunday. Nigel briefly overtook Mickey in Sept 2009 before he regained the lead in March 2010 and kept it until last weekend's Bundesliga.

After Howell only drew today (from a lost position) against 2412-rated Peter Roberson in Cheddleton v Grantham Sharks, I asked 2700.com for his updated rating. Their very prompt answer was Howell 2700.6, Adams 2700.5.

If neither plays any more Fide-rated games before the end of the month, both would be rounded up to 2701 on the April Fide list. Although A comes before H, Howell would stay ahead as he has played four rated games in the period against Adams's two.

With apologies for being pernickety, that isn't true. Adams would be rounded down to 2700. It is the absolute value of the monthly change that is rounded up.

That's a new one, presumably a cross between pernickety and finickity. It may catch on.

That is very strange. Normally, as you would expect, Bundesliga results are reported promptly.
