Round 8 - wins for Sam & Sarah, draws for Mark & Lateefah. Missed the end of Neil's game so will have to wait for results & pairings later.

Another excellent result for Lateefah and a good day all round.
Re: Capelle La Grande International Open 26th Feb - 5th Marc
Last round starts at 9am English time:
HEBDEN Mark L 2558 v POGORELOV Ruslan 2427
BUTKIEWICZ Lukasz 2394 v Franklin, Samuel GA 2185
HEGARTY Sarah N 2096 v BENITAH Yohan 2389
MESSAM-SPARKS Lateefah 1904 v RAVOT Sylvain 2250
PARFETT Gerald F v LEBEL-ARIAS Julia 1896
MEYLAN Pierre 2092 v BERRY Neil 2331
Although Neil's had an amazing tournament playing 6 GMs I don't think a win tomorrow is enough. By my reckoning he will have played an average of (21198/9) 2355 (its currently 4.5/8 against a 2388 field) and 5.5/9 is only a 2431 performance as far as I can see as for 5.5/9 you need to have played a minimum of 2370.
Even rounding up his round 3 opponent to 2050 only makes his average 2366. I do hope I'm wrong, maybe Jack or someone else could confirm. http://cappelle-chess.fr/fr2/default.php?page=3943
Playing a 2150 for example would have sufficed.

Round 9 – 9am UK – we think Mark will just about get onto a live board, prize money is €150 for 40th place, currently in 30th position. Unfortunately Neil lost in round 8, the crosstable gives his perf as 2437 but with a 2092 opponent is there still any possibility of an IM norm? I don’t understand these calculations. His lowest rated opponent was 1952, will this already have been counted as 2050 in the perf calculations?
HEBDEN Mark 2558 ENG (5.5) v POGORELOV Rusian GM 2427 UKR

Morning Loz
Just seen that I've duplicated the pairings from your post.
Many thanks to posters on this thread, am taking your comments about the 'nature' of Cappelle and the pairings on board and will taking them in to consideration in the future. For us it proves to be a good coaching environment and playing conditions mirror what the youngsters would experience at World & European championships. It is also cost effective as Mark gets conditions from the organisers so I do not need to get finance for his accommodation.

I thought I'd post them in case the early start meant you didn't have the chance. You've organised an excellent trip and whilst norms are the icing on the cake I think all three will have benefitted hugely from working with Mark and both Lateefah and Sam have both had very good performances whilst Sarah has been caught in the yo-yo effect but has still played to her rating and will have benefited from the coaching.Peter Turner wrote:Morning Loz

Let's hope the early start doesn't affect their chess.

I agree. I think the rating performance calculated on the site is wrong. The irony is that if it were right, and didn't include the uplift to 2050, then 2092 would be about the minimum opposition needed.LozCooper wrote:Last round starts at 9am English time:

I wonder which rating list will be used for the tournament norm calculations?

The ones in operation at the start of the tournament so Jan 2011.Peter Turner wrote:I wonder which rating list will be used for the tournament norm calculations?

1st January 2011 you would expect by analogy with Hastings which this year used 1st November 2010. The rule is that you lock the ratings to the player at the start of the event.Peter Turner wrote:I wonder which rating list will be used for the tournament norm calculations?
It's one of those anomalies with the way the Elo system is implemented in practice, that you can play the same player in the same rating period with the same result and get two different rating performances.

It looks like Mark's game isn't on the live boards, they have 19 games showing but not Mark's

Just returned from venue, Mark not on live board, having his one hour into play nicotine break. No posting at venue as yet on norm seekers requirements.

Well, a long disapointing day sad to say. Mark drew in rook and pawn ending after 5 hours, the others lost against stronger players. Sam was playing to win his grading section but not to be. Missed Neil's finish but result at the recorders table indicated a draw.
