Lawrence/Carl

Thanks for doing the Cappelle thread, I'll try to get some regular information to the forum.
The Cappelle tournament is unique and so handy being just across the channel near Dunkirk. Currently there are approx 600 entries, 67 rated at 2500+, 180 titled players and all playing in the same tournament along with local school children and club players.
Mark is ranked 35th !! which makes a top finish difficult enough but then the fact that I pick him up at 9 o'clock in the morning to start his coaching is really an energy sapper before he can concentrate on his own game. It's a great experience for our youngsters and Mark's support over the last 7 years has been invaluable.

Round 2
First round out of the way with bit of a mystery. At the start of the round I went to check the England players and saw that Chris Doran was not at his board, went later to see if he had arrived to discover his board indicated a finished game. The result indicated a default point to his opponent, with a default time of 30 minutes wondered if he’d had an unexpected delay in travelling to the venue. Chris not paired in round 2, hope he’s ok because Cappelle normally only pair people who have physically registered before 12 o’clock on the first day.

PAYEN Arnaud 2367 FRA v HEBDEN Mark 2558 ENG
FRANKLIN Samuel 2185 ENG v FLAMANT Jacky 1817 FRA
HEGARTY Sarah 2096 ENG v VAN ASSENDELT Floris 2337 NED
MESSAM ~ SPARKS Lateefah 1904 ENG v ZOONEKYND Philippe 1648 FRA
HAJI Mohammed 1903 FRA v PARFETT Gerald 1647 ENG

We are confused with Sam’s pairing after his first round win in the accelerated system as he’s now playing an opponent 150 points less than in round 1.

One of the approaches used by the French in accelerated pairings is to award dummy points for the first few rounds depending on ratings. They then pair conventionally against players of the same "score". So if Mark continues to draw with 2350 players, he will get a supply of them until either the acceleration runs out, or someone from a lower rating group catches up.

I don't know that it works any better than the English system. You still get massive mismatches in rating once the acceleration is removed.

In this instance the field was originally divided into thirds with the addition of a notional 2 points and 1 point respectively to the top two of the three groups. Sam is in the middle group, so after his first round win he is now in the group with a "score" of 2.

It so happens that he's just in the top half by rating of that group, so he's playing one of the lowest rated players in the group. If his own rating had been 2175 rather than 2185, he'd have been playing someone rated over 2500.

'Forum Power' - Thank you Roger and David for explanations. I was pretty certain that it would not take long for someone to respond - much appreciated.

You can see the big yo-yo effect for some of the players in this accelerated pairing system but interesting to note that with 570 players there were only 4 players on 3/3 !! In Round 4 we had wins for Sam, Lateefah and Gerald with a draw for Mark

Round 5 pairings – 1pm UK time – Mark on a live board again BUT yesterday every time I logged on the ‘live link’ I got 2010 games!! Hope it was just a local problem here because Mark’s endgame is worth following.

HEBDEN Mark 2558 ENG (3) v BERNADSKIY Vitaliy 2438 UKR
APICELLA Manuel 2531 FRA v FRANKLIN Samuel 2185 ENG (3)
POUYADE Fabrice 1912 (FRA) v HEGARTY Sarah 2096 ENG (2)
DESSENNE Francois 2065 FRA v MESSAM ~ SPARKS Lateefah 1904 ENG (2)
PARFETT Gerald 1647 ENG (2) v DONATINI Adrien 1410 FRA

Thanks for the good wishes.
We could not get the links to live games to work from the official site yesterday but ok by using http://cappelle-chess.fr/live2011/tfd.htm Mark on a live board again, 2 of the top games already drawn after 1 hour. One game, board 3, after 19 moves which would require the arbiters permission according to the rules!!
