Three English players took part in this weekend’s Bundesliga. Luke McShane (Werder Bremen) scored his first win of the season on Saturday against GM Sebastian Bogner on board 3 to help his team to a 7-1 victory against Wattenscheid but he then lost to IM Ruud Janssen on Sunday as his team drew 4-4 with Emsdetten.

David Howell had a hard fought draw with black on Saturday against GM Alexander Goloshchapov but blundered on Sunday and lost to GM Chanda Sandipan on Sunday. His SG Trier team-mate, Stephen Gordon, had two draws against IM Benjamin Bok and GM Jan Werle. David played board 2 and Stephen was on board 5. The team won 4.5-3.5 on Saturday against SC Remagen but lost 6-2 to Solingen on Sunday.

In just over two weeks time Sean Hewitt will be hosting his latest international tournament which is a 9 round event over 5 days with IM, WGM and WIM norms available as well as the chance for players to obtain ratings. It is also an excellent opportunity to play in a very well organised event with good playing conditions.

Three grandmasters have already confirmed their places in the Master sections, namely Danny Gormally, Keith Arkell and Alexander Cherniaev. IM Jack Rudd is also playing and I am delighted to see that our leading under 21 player, FM Yang-Fan Zhou will be
amongst the players aiming for an IM norm.

There is currently one place left in the Masters and three in the Major. The Masters event is open to players rated over 2050 and will offer norm opportunities, the Challengers is open to players rated over 1900 or ECF grade 150 and the Major is open to all players rated below 2000 or ECF grade 165. Winners of the Challengers qualify for future Masters events.
