Congratulations to English Grandmaster Luke McShane who won the Grandmaster Group B all-play-all event (on tie-break from fellow GM David Navara) at the 2011 Tata Steel Chess Tournament in Wijk aan Zee, Netherlands which was held from 15th to 30th January. Luke scored 8.5 out of 13 and finished with a FIDE rating performance of 2768. He also qualifies for the Grandmaster Group A in 2012 which includes many of the top players in the world.

Congratulations to English Grandmaster Nigel Short who had a 2883 performance scoring 8.5/10 against an average of 2587 and finishing half a point behind the Ukrainian GM Vassily Ivanchuk. Other English scores included Michael Adams and Gawain Jones who scored 6.5 and Jon Speelman who scored 5.5.

This was Stuart Conquest’s first year as Tournament Director and both him, Simon Williams who was the online and onsite commentator, Brian Callaghan and all the sponsors and support team of arbiters, live game and website experts deserve a big thank you for helping to organise what has now become one of the most prestigious open tournaments in the world.

I am expecting several English Grandmaster to play. Michael Adams, Luke McShane, David Howell, Stewart Haslinger and Stephen Gordon have all taken part in earlier weekends this season.
