Gawain Jones was 34th seed but scored 17.5/26 to finish 14th whilst David Moskovic scored 14/26. The event was a double round event and 10 of Gawain’s opponents were GMs including Ivanchuk, Gashimov and Movesesian who are all rated over 2700. Maxime Vachier-Lagrave won with 22/26, whilst Vassily Ivanchuk finished 2nd with 20 and Ruslan Ponomariov was third with 19.5.

Gawain is now on 5.5/6 in the rapidplay having beaten GM Sergei Rublevsky rated 2678 and drawing with GM Romain Edouard rated 2636. David Moskovic is on 3/5 (not yet heard his round 6 result). There appears to be 708 players in the tournament and 10 players made it to 5/5.

Gawain is on 5.5/8 at the end of the first day. Round9 starts tomorrow morning at 9.30am and there's 13 rounds in total. Okay, Gawain is on 9/12 and plays Jobava in the last round. With 4 on 10 and 7 on 9.5 a win will give him a high placing.

Sadly Gawain lost in round 13 against the Georgian number 1 rated 2707 so finished on 9/13.

I've played in the RP a couple of times and it is very entertaining (and strong). I managed to find a good hotel for about £25 a night, and the flights were reasonably cheap if you flew out on the Thursday and back on Monday morning (4 passengers on the latter - the cabin crew tossed a coin for who worked and who sat in Club!) The playing hall tended to be incredibly noisy, but the event was a worthwhile experience. Temperature outside was about -12 C the first time, which is a bit too cold for my taste. The venue had a Christmas fair on and a glass of peach vodka warmed you up, whether you drank it or set fire to it. (Caution - 1 is probably enough...) There is an Irish pub (of course) and an "English" restaurant near the centre of Warsaw, but most of the local cuisine is good!

Rapidplay 18-19 December:

Gawain Jones finished on 9/13 after a last round loss to GM Baadur Jobava rated 2707. He played a great tournament though including a win against GM Sergei Rublevsky rated 2678. David Moskovic finished on 8.5, defeating English resident IM Roland Berzinsh from Latvia in the last round. First place was shared between GMs Zoltan Almasi, Vassily Ivanchuk, Vugar Gashimov, Anton Korobov and Alexei Shirov on 10.5.
