Just a quick return to the question of James Holland. It seems he is a very rapidly improving player. Assuming the ECF sends a limited group to Major Championships (so they can all have great support), I doubt that James would have been 'selected' via any selection method. In fact the system in place at the moment probably gives him the best possible opportunity of wresting a place from more established players. I looked up James' results from the selection tournament

Victor Jones 191 Draw
Jude Lenier 165 WIN
Craig Whitfield 185 Loss
Jean-Luc Weller 184 Loss
james Foster 175 Draw

With the benefit of hindsight and seeing James' results at Uxbridge it is easy to say he should have gone, but I don't really see how the Junior Director could really select him. At least with the system we have in place, James had his chance.

Matthew, just to make the point crystal clear. I'm not criticising the decision who to send / not to send. I'm criticising the policy of only sending one player be age group for each sex.

The 2011 World Youth championships are scheduled for Mar del Plata, Argentina. I suspect that on cost grounds alone it will be a question then of sending fewer players rather than more.

If parents are prepared to foot the bill (and I accept that there may be fewer parents prepared to do so) why not let them go?

Just been browsing the results from the other home nations, and two players are having an excellent tournament.

Alex Bullen (WLS, U-16) and Ian McDonald (SCO, U-14) are both performing significantly above the ratings both currently gaining 50 points plus

Hopefully those English players, who have a small loss of rating points, can finish strongly to turn their performances around, I always believe gaining rating points is always a sign off good performance and should be the foremost expectation, medals are a bonus at the end of the day

Isn't that the case today, already?

No, the current policy is only to send the winners (or co-winners) from the selection trials. Isn't the 2011 event in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from 12-22 November?

Results so far: Yang-Fan won, Ravi drew, Anna, Tarun & Sheila lost. Felix is a pawn down after the time scramble in an ending after a promising position in the early middle game.

Felix lost and so did Maria. That is 1.5/7 so far, very disappointing not to be able to follow up on a really good seventh round.

Scotland are also having a bad round 0.5/8 for the Scots so far.

Robert and Jasper both drew, so just waiting for Mark Kenyon's result, 2.5/9 so far.
