Hi Matthew,

Yes it's purely his dislike of playing in Russia and Khanty in particular. The other two players who made themselves unavailable prior to the selections were Stewart Haslinger and Nick Pert.

Having lived in various parts of Russia for 3 years I can't say I blame him although it does seem such a shame as with him included we surely would have been in the running for a medal.

However it will interesting to see how the cream of England's young blood (and wise old sage on Board 1!) get on.

There would have been enough money for both Short and Adams, then?

In rating order from the active list:

Harriet, Susan, Anya, Natasha, Jana, Sophie & Cathy.

Incidentally, one notes that in the last 4NCL season, Maria Yurenok made a performance of 2202, whilst Sarah Hegarty (whom she beat) made a performance of 1958. With that in mind, the selection of Sarah on board five must have been a difficult decision, though I don't claim to know her other results and it is certainly true that we need to keep giving opportunities to our younger women players.

This was posted on the CS (Chess Scotland) Noticeboard by International Director Andy Muir 11 days ago (no update since)

"We can't announce the olympiad squads yet. We will send an Open and a female team plus a captain (11 people).
However the organisers have said no single rooms (ie Keti must share with a guy) . Also, they have said FIDE delegates must pay $1800 for their flights. We have several things to protest about
Some players' employers will not say whether they can get time off which confuses things further"

Surely one good 4NCL season does not suggest playing strength.

For one I could "easily" get 2300+ performance if it was my pure aim, as id give myself 11 whites and hand pick my opponents all year.

I'd be interested why Stewart was unavailable, hope his health problems have not returned

Fair enough, I was aware that I didn't have all the information. A very good performance by Sarah in the U20 event.

Hi Mick,

No, no health problems with Stewart, purely a dates issue with his studies.

No set targets but the players are ambitious and want to do as well as possible.
