Hopefully the 39 defaults in round 1 will encourage the organisers to consider some form of pre-registration at future events.

There's nothing unusual about large numbers of defaults in Spanish tournaments. I'm pretty sure I made a comment about it happening in a tournament I played in a few years ago - almost 1/3 of the round 1 games were defaults.

Good luck in Bangkok round six tomorrow, Ian. Third with 3/5 to Nigel Short and Stephen Gordon among the English contingent doesn't sound bad, especially since your only loss according to Chess Results was apparently a round three default (what happened there?).
A shame that your round six game against Australian IM Khamatgaleev misses the lichess live board cut by one (24 to 23) as I and other Forum members would have tuned in to it.

Illness. I got a bad cold the day before the tournament began which still hasn't cleared completely. I decided to risk playing in round 1 as half-point byes weren't permitted in the first round. I got lucky as my opponent blundered 2 pawns on move 9, turned that into a piece and a pawn on move 11 and resigned on move 15 after about 45 minutes play. I'd have struggled if it had been a long game, so I decided to take a half-point bye in round 2 and then a zero point bye in round 3.

"Gormally-Ivanchuk "

Well done Danny! Was Ivanchuk wearing the same top as he did in Reykjavik?

Freddy Gordon's recent form has been stellar, and has started well here:
