Re: Qatar Masters
Just musing, but without referencing the game in particular, whilst an obvious upset, i don't see why a 2510 beating a 2840 with white in a massive Swiss where the stronger player is motivated to take risks by the nature of the tournament is such massive surprise or even necessarily a failure of the rating system. People can have good and bad days. And are far more likely in an era where such rating gaps are routine due to participation of "the elite" in mass Swisses as opposed to just spend the entire time playing amongst themselves. Indeed, subject to faulty memory, i don't think this is the first time Carlsen has suffered such a set back early on in a tournament of this nature and may well have gone on to eventual victory with an overall rating point gain. As he may do here.

Re: Qatar Masters
Should the arbiters have intervened before Fedoseev's time ran out? If it was known that he had left they could have penalised him with immediate loss of the game under article 11.2.3. If the arbiters' response to that would have been that they didn't know where he was should they have started looking for him after a little while and then taken action when they couldn't find him?IM Jack Rudd wrote: ↑Fri Oct 13, 2023 7:07 pmMind you, Carlsen managed not to be the worst loser at this event.

Fedoseev's quoted message above doesn't really clear things up much.
Is he another one insinuating cheating without having the stones to overtly state it?

Commentator 1 (female voice): "Is she winning?"
Commentator 2 (male voice): "Er, is she, er, winning? She's winning or losing... <slight pause> Or its a draw! <longer pause>That's what's going on *then mumbled in quizzical tone* but how do you stop the pawn? Stop the pawn?"
</SPOILER ALERT>
Someone else could maybe name the commentator that came up with this gem, and post the game, the result and the position that prompted such deep philosophical thoughts!!

EDIT: Is it purely coincidental that of Carlsen's 7 pairings so far, 6 have been against Indian players? I am not sure what the odds are on that given the mix of players in the tournament as a whole. Carlsen nearly lost in round 4 against Pranesh:

Olimpiu Di Luppi on Twitter: "17-year-old Pranesh reacted with incredulity to Magnus Carlsen's 43...Ke5!!, a move that gave away a full rook with check but secured a study-like lifeline."
After 6 rounds, Carlsen is in the group on 4.5/6 with four players leading on 5/6.

The usual answer to such questions is "the a priori probability of Carlsen's getting six Indians was very low; the probability of someone's getting six Indians was pretty high".

Pairings are deterministic rather than random. The top half v bottom half method can lead to repeats of very similar pairings. Thus if a number of Indian players are in the target range for a Carlsen pairing, he will meet several of them.Christopher Kreuzer wrote: ↑Tue Oct 17, 2023 11:30 pmEDIT: Is it purely coincidental that of Carlsen's 7 pairings so far, 6 have been against Indian players? Chess-results give a breakdown of the different nationalities: https://chess-results.com/tnr831193.asp ... ES&flag=30 Out of 158 players there are 75 from India but just one from Qatar.

A loss for Magnus in round 7 effectively ends his hopes of first. There will be five, or possibly six players leading on 5.5/7.

A loss with White to A Karthikeyan, rated 228 points lower than him.

Albeit performing at 2775 and more than capable of taking advantage of the chances Magnus gave him, even when very low on time.Matt Mackenzie wrote: ↑Wed Oct 18, 2023 7:06 pmA loss with White to A Karthikeyan, rated 228 points lower than him.

A late blunder from Arjun means that there is a play-off between Nodirbek & Nodirbek!
