2023 FIDE World Cup Sun 30th Jul 2023 - Thu 24th Aug 2023

Post by Mick Norris » Mon Jul 31, 2023 3:59 pm

TWIC
The FIDE World Cup takes place in Baku, Azerbaijan Sunday 30th Jul to Thursday 24th Aug 2023. The event is a qualifier for the FIDE Candidates tournament as well as being worth winning in its own right. Magnus Carlsen is the top seed, he has never won the event and clearly sees this as something he would like to rectify. His leading rivals are Hikaru Nakamura, Fabiano Caruana, Ian Nepomniachtchi, Anish Giri, Wesley So, Teimour Radjabov. D Gukesh, Shakhriyar Mamedyarov in a strong field. Alongside is an equally well represented women's field including World Champion Ju Wenjun. Play starts at 12pm BST or 15:00 local time. The leading players join the event in round 2.

Report
At 3 PM sharp local time in Baku (Azerbaijan), the first round of the World Cup began, where altogether 228 players in the Open and the Women's tournament are fighting for the top three places in each group leading to the Candidates tournament, the final qualifying stage to select the next challenger for the title of World Champion.

Not all of the players are taking part in the first round. As per regulation, the top 50 players in the Open and the top 25 in the Women's section will join the event from the second round.

Altogether, 114 games were played in round one – 76 in the Open tournament and 38 in the Women's. Three players did not manage to show up in Baku despite being registered – Eric Hansen and Christopher Yoo in the Open, and Aleksandra Maltsevskaya in the Women's tournament.

David Howell will have to wait to know his second round opponent, as Brkic and Matamoros Franco have drawn their 2 games so far

Those who followed the European Championships 2023 thread will remember one of the qualifiers from there for the World Cup 2023 was the young Turkish IM Ediz Gurel (14 years old):

https://ecforum.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f= ... 60#p294545

Gurel caused an upset in round 1 by beating GM Velimir Ivic:

https://en.chessbase.com/post/world-cup-2023-r1-d1

Looking at some of the other EICC 2023 qualifiers:

Kourkoulos-Arditis lost in round 1 (to Fridman) and Nasuta lost to Erdős.

Janik still playing his round 1 match against fellow EICC 2023 qualifier Gumularz.

Brkić also still playing his round 1 match (Howell will meet the winner of that match).

All the other EICC 2023 qualifiers through to round 2 or had a bye.

Both the Svane brothers went through to round 2.

The Chessbase article lists the major upsets from round 1 in both the Open and Women's sections.

Anyone have any dark horses they might back to win the event (ahead of the usual suspects)?

I am going to go for both Praggnanandhaa and Keymer to go deep into the tournament (though I can't see Keymer getting past Carlsen).

Eltaj Safarli did not turn up in time for his 2nd game in round 1 and lost it by default.
These things come in threes. Terry Chapman, Eltaj Safarli, and...watch this space.

Edit: "Anyone have any dark horses..."
As time is a topic I'll be doing a tricast today.

Live commentary is very off-putting and many are posting complaints on Twitter about the tournament and the accommodation provided.

An uneventful (apart from his clock) 31 move draw for David with black in game 1.

The times on chess24 have 14 min for move 4, not sure if he was surprised by the opening choice, and 36 min for move 12; it reminds me why watching David live is stressful; anyway, the draw with black is a decent result, let's hope he can win with white tomorrow

I see Ivanchuk is playing, so good news he got there

A draw for David in game 2 so tie-breaks tomorrow.

Solid 2500 GM Sanal knocked out Abdusattorov after he played an over ambitious exchange sac.

It looked like two Turkish GMs were going to cause upsets but Wesley So found a nice trick against Can here: White to play and put his bishop on the wrong square...

It went to h2, presumably? Whoops.
