I am going to go for both Praggnanandhaa and Keymer to go deep into the tournament (though I can't see Keymer getting past Carlsen)
Just how deep?
I hadn't really expected Praggnanandhaa to get this deep into the tournament, but it would be great to see him win the whole thing. He would certainly deserve it if he defeats Caruana and then Carlsen (the two 'C's?). Anyone backing Abasov to win the event for the host nation?

No plans to watch the World Cup final at 11am on Sunday, Geoff?
Hi Chirs,

Sunday morning is car booty time to stock up on my e-bay stuff or sell in my shop. Have a couple of quid on Spain. They look very good.

I've watch the Hibs ladies a few times. Good, refreshing, entertaining and skillful but I see vast amounts of money coming into ladies football. Soon the rolling about in fake agony, arguing with the ref, diving, the so called professional foul etc will become the norm. Hope not.

Back on thread; watching games. Staying with Carlsen - Caruana final, Carlsen win on tie breaks. Carlsen will not defend this title next time this event is played.

I wonder if I'm the only person who saw Magnus had played 9 Rg1 and thought it was a transmission error.

Magnus wins game 1 albeit black had a big opportunity on move 34.

Goryachkina-Salimova was a draw.

Hi Lawrence,

I never joined the game till after move 12 so missed it.(is it a theoretically known position?)
Carlsen game over. 1-0 His opponents (and us) do not expect Carlsen to blunder so he gets a way with more than his fair share of slips. Good Game.

He credited his second Peter-Heine Nielsen and the engines with the Rg1 idea so it may be new.

Anna Muzychuk wins to go 1-0 up in the third place play-off which has a Candidates place up for grabs.

It’s one of Stockfish’s top 5 moves on lichess and his opponent did not find Stockfish’s most accurate reply, Qa5.

For someone who so dislikes classical chess, Magnus is still pretty good at it.

Last interview I read was that he genuinely likes classical chess still, he just doesn't like the (quite insane) level of preparation involved in preparing for a WC match!

Incredibly hard to blame him for that.

After a previous match in this event, he said he found classical chess boring more generally. Its referred to earlier in this thread somewhere.

Abasov-Carlsen ends in a draw meaning Magnus is into the football and Abasov will play the 3rd/4th place play-off.

Anna Muzychuk also gets a draw to win the 3rd/4th place play-off and qualify for the Candidates.

Pragg-Caruana is a draw so they have tie-breaks tomorrow.

Great attempt by Abasov to conjure up a winning attempt in that ending v Carlsen. Against a less alert opponent his idea would have worked.

Hibs, Hearts, Hibs ladies and Hearts ladies where all playing today in Edinburgh (both Hibs teams were playing within a mile of each other) and I stayed indoors to watch Chess. :? (I'll be picking up a reluctant few quid due to Spain winning the World Cup.)
