By this stage of the World Cup, isn't everyone just knackered?
True. I remember the final stages of the 2004 Kasimdzhanov Adams match, it was like watching a car crash.

Even worse, I think, the Svidler v Kariakin final of eight or so years ago. It is particularly pointless to have long matches when both players are already qualified for the candidates, which for most players (except you know who) is what it is really all about.

Carlsen-Praggnanandhaa ends in a very uneventdul30 move draw.

Caruana looks likely to equalise against Abasov, currently an exchange for a pawn up.

Magnus won the first rapid tiebreak with black. Pragg got into time trouble in a complex ending.

c3 Sicilian in the second game aiming for a very dry position

Magnus successfully hoovered everything off the board in game 2 to win the world cup.

Excellent news, well done Magnus

Hopefully he can now avoid entering anything in the World Championship cycle, and give up classical chess if it makes him unhappy

Caruana would have settled for 3rd before the event

Great performance from Abasov nonetheless

A similar age to Alexander The Great with "no worlds left to conquer", you might say.

Sounds like something he might have picked up from former manager Lawrence Trent! Lawrence told me some years ago about the possibility of 1 d4 Nf6 2 Bg5 Ne4 3 Bf4 Nc6, meeting 4 d5 with 4...e5 (4 Nf3 d6).

Not the happiest analogy, wasn't Alexander 33 when he died?!
