Is this the first major international chess event held in Albania? If so, the mass outbreak of sickness becomes just a bit more unfortunate.

That's a shame, he was looking good after his second round win.

What is the story behind the story of the event then? Is there a consensus that the risotto did it? Chessbase is managing rather brilliantly to say nothing at all about it.
It would have been his third norm, albeit only 25 games so he would still have needed another one.

I'll keep quiet until all my players are safely transferred to the airport and on their flights home
Following the news today, it occured to me that it is fortunate the event was not being held in Israel. :(

Hope all the players affected recover and get home safely.

The European Schools took place there in May, and got good reviews.

Ravi Haria didn't have a great tournament but it may be that he was also stricken with the virus.

Loz, now that your teams are safely en route home, do you have any more information about what caused the virus?

Well there are still four players there, they fly back tonight on the 23:10 WizzAir flight to Luton.

Bearing in mind I wasn't in Albania I can only comment on what I heard. There were at least 90 cases of what the Albanians refer to as "light seasonal virus" all in the Grand Blue Fafa Resort. This was the official hotel where players paid for full board. As far as I'm aware there were no cases in either of the additional hotels.

That's also what Elizabeth Pähtz said in her tweet that I referred to a few days ago.

Let's hope we never catch their "heavy seasonal virus"
