Good performances from Lan Yao, Matthew Wadsworth, Borna Derakhshani, Andrew Ledger, Harry Grieve

Are there norm chances?

Yes, but not for Wadsworth. Leiden are resting their top GM.

Lan Yao already has 3 WGM norms but suspect this is a fourth.
Borna needs a draw if I understand the regulations correctly.

I think Andrew needs a win, Harry & Matthew have only played 2 GMs and their average is too low.

Board prizes are also available:

Lan Yao is in contention, Akshaya is likely to finish 4th on the reserve board.

Borna will only have four titled opponents so no for him.
Surely four is enough.

Good point  So a draw is enough?

Are there board prizes for the reserve boards? The pages you've linked to say, at the top, "According to the regulations, for the individual board prizes the reserve players are considered to be competing on Board No 4 (women)/Board No 6 (open)". So Akshaya is currently in 10th place on board 4/5 combined.

Lan Yao I see has the WGM application "open" at 2023 3rd FIDE Council, so she doesn't need the norm, hopefully she will win a board prize

Good luck to all the players today

Thanks for reminding me, that had slipped my mind. In any case, she only played three games which is below the required 50% for her to be eligible.

Yes, it never hurts to have an extra norm in case there's an issue with one of the original three.

I do hope that her playing today doesn't deny her a medal. Akshaya was only in Albania for the first four rounds so there wasn't an option for Lan Yao to rest today.

Perhaps just as relevant is that she was the only player even in a fit state to make it to the board yesterday :(

Yes, the tournament has been a horror show health wise. I'm still in contact with both teams to see how many players can make it today.

Mention also for Abigail Weersing, who despite being a busy second year A-Level student managed to bounce her FIDE from 1919 in July to I think over 2120 (live list) in the space of about 3 tournaments, so presumably can now claim a WFM title if she wants it.

Sadly Borna defaulted his game. He contacted me this morning to say he was feeling very ill and myself and the on site captain left the decision with him.

That's a shame, he was looking good after his second round win.

What is the story behind the story of the event then? Is there a consensus that the risotto did it? Chessbase is managing rather brilliantly to say nothing at all about it.

It would have been his third norm, albeit only 25 games so he would still have needed another one.

I'll keep quiet until all my players are safely transferred to the airport and on their flights home
