Loz's link says to the tournament announcement and results says "Prise en compte Elo FIDE : FIDE Janvier 2024", so that means the tournament organisers' expect the results to be included in the January rating list.Mick Norris wrote: ↑Tue Dec 26, 2023 9:49 pmIs the tournament going to be rated in time to make a difference?
I saw on the FIDE rating website it was in the January tournament list

If, and it's a big if, the matches are rated then Alireza has now overtaken Wesley after moving to 4/4 in his seven round swiss. He does still have a 2562 with black and probably Kamsky still to play though so it will still be very difficult for him to maintain it.

The Chartres matches are no longer mentioned at https://ratings.fide.com/rated_tourname ... ountry=FRA, although Rouen along with completed December events are listed for rating in the January list.

FIDE News
The FIDE Council reviewed the tournament registration procedure and approved some changes, effective immediately (see FIDE RATING REGULATIONS). These changes primarily concern the tournaments, with at least one of the participants having a rating of 2700+.
0.2 The tournaments to be rated shall be pre-registered by the federation in whose territory it is held, and they will be responsible for the submission of results and rating fees. Council may additionally designate these rights and responsibilities to Affiliated Organisations that are representing an autonomous territory which is contained within no more than one Federation.
The tournament and its playing schedule must be registered:
0.2.1 Not later than 30 days before the tournament starts, if one of the players in the tournament is rated in excess of 2700, or a female player rated in excess of 2500.
0.2.2 Otherwise, three days before the tournament starts.
The QC Chairman may refuse to register a tournament.
Exceptions to permit tournaments to be rated even though it is registered later than the prescribed notice period may be granted:
0.2.3 Tournaments in category 0.2.1: With the approval of the President
0.2.4 Tournaments in category 0.2.2: With the approval of the QC Chairman
All tournaments played under Hybrid conditions as described in 2.1 must be approved individually by the QC Chairman.
In exceptional cases involving tournaments with an average rating in excess of 2700, after consultation with the QC Chairman, the Council or the President may approve tournaments or individual games for rating which have not been submitted for rating by the national federation.

Re: 2024 Candidates qualification revised process
What does FIDE think that's going to achieve? This particular tournament in Rouen is a fairly long-running annual one on fixed dates, so could be registered years in advance. Anyone wishing to repeat what the Indians did could register a tournament well in advance and then cancel it if it became clear that it wasn't going to help someone qualify for the Candidates.Mick Norris wrote: ↑Thu Dec 28, 2023 4:15 pmThe FIDE Council reviewed the tournament registration procedure and approved some changes, effective immediately (see FIDE RATING REGULATIONS).

I don't think there's any issue with Rouen (other than which list it will be rated in), or indeed with Chennai, but may well be with Chartres depending if effective immediately can apply to an event that's already finished

I think registering the Chartres event as a 50 player event then changing it to a two player all-play-all a few days before probably didn't go down well with FIDE.Mick Norris wrote: ↑Thu Dec 28, 2023 5:35 pmI don't think there's any issue with Rouen (other than which list it will be rated in), or indeed with Chennai, but may well be with Chartres depending if effective immediately can apply to an event that's already finished

Have they actually stated a reason for disallowing it?LawrenceCooper wrote: ↑Thu Dec 28, 2023 5:40 pmI think registering the Chartres event as a 50 player event then changing it to a two player all-play-all a few days before probably didn't go down well with FIDE.Mick Norris wrote: ↑Thu Dec 28, 2023 5:35 pmI don't think there's any issue with Rouen (other than which list it will be rated in), or indeed with Chennai, but may well be with Chartres depending if effective immediately can apply to an event that's already finished

Re: 2024 Candidates qualification revised process
I haven't seen a statement saying they won't be rating them but they did issue a statement along the lines of reserving the right not to rate it and subsequently changed the rules for registering tournaments and the three matches disappeared from the list of events to be rated.Matt Mackenzie wrote: ↑Thu Dec 28, 2023 6:43 pmHave they actually stated a reason for disallowing it?LawrenceCooper wrote: ↑Thu Dec 28, 2023 5:40 pmI think registering the Chartres event as a 50 player event then changing it to a two player all-play-all a few days before probably didn't go down well with FIDE.Mick Norris wrote: ↑Thu Dec 28, 2023 5:35 pmI don't think there's any issue with Rouen (other than which list it will be rated in), or indeed with Chennai, but may well be with Chartres depending if effective immediately can apply to an event that's already finished

Alireza beats Kamsky to move to 6/6 so is up to 2764 live with the matches included or 2758.4? without. Wesley So is 2757.4.

Re: 2024 Candidates qualification revised process
At the end of the day, the person who wants it most is probably going to qualify (I'm pretty sure withdrawing from the world rapid was a painfull decision). There were actions Wesley could have taken to stay ahead. He chose not to and now it's probably too late. I say fair play to Firouzja. As for FIDE.....

In general I think a very positive development bringing the world championship closer to the average (though still open strength) player. Plus getting rid of the average weighting has kept it interesting to the end.

Re: 2024 Candidates qualification revised process
All sorts of things one can say about this business, including that Rouen was really a pretty soft target - you would think that very many players in the world top 100 would have made 5/5 against the weaker five of Firouzja's opponents, so it was really a question of beating Kamsky. On which note, has anyone asked what he - Kamsky - was doing in Rouen? (Has he played there before? Was he invited by the organisers?).
Not that I can get too excited about this, after all the multitude of irregularities over the years - and few can doubt that the Candidates' will be considerably more interesting with Firouzja instead of So.
