FIDE World Team Championship 2022

Post by Simon Rogers » Tue Nov 22, 2022 5:20 pm

12 teams are taking part for the FIDE World Team Championship in Jerusalem between 19th and 26th November.
I believe our own Alex Holowczak is Chief Arbiter for the tournament.
Time control is 45 minutes for the whole game and an increment of 10 seconds per move starting from move 1.

Time limit seems a bit quick but there are plenty of other controversies and interesting stuff going on in this event. Venue, Niemann, Ivanchuk's amazing Nd7 etc Report

"There are 45 minutes per move, with a 10-second increment from move 1, meaning 40 moves last less than an hour and the games are rated as rapid chess."

I assume they meant 45 minutes for ALL moves...

The following day Anton left a rook en prise against Moussard and Moussard didn't take it. I and another poster on Twitter had a field day.

There surely are: the choice of venue is, to use the mildest term I can think of, an embarrassment.

And the test is 60 moves not 40. Otherwise correct.

So if FIDE are to be consistent, they will hold their next event in Mariupol.

Chess 24 reports on the group stages and quarter finals
The 2022 World Team Championship is taking place in Jerusalem, though the precise venue has drawn criticism. The Dan Jerusalem Hotel is located in East Jerusalem on land much of the world considers to be illegally occupied, and BDS, a Palestinian-led organisation, called on FIDE to move the event. A similar call to move or boycott the European Society of International Law’s Research Forum in 2017 gives an idea of the particular complexities of the Mount Scopus site — the Dan Hotel is outside the borders of the Israeli enclave from 1948-1967.
It’s India-Uzbekistan and China-Spain in the FIDE World Team Championship semi-finals after India survived a comeback to beat top seeds France in a blitz playoff, with Vishy Anand calling Indian hero Nihal Sarin “a blitz genius”. The other shock was Spain taking down Azerbaijan, with David Anton defeating Teimour Radjabov in the crucial game.

The decision of FIDE to hold an Israel organised event in occupied East Jerusalem is contrary to international law.

For the official status of East Jerusalem read this:

If any participants in this disgrace look out the windows of their luxury hotel, they might see some of this happening to their fellow human beings.

Some 30 Palestinian families are facing expulsion from their East Jerusalem homes even though an Israel Lands Administration document from the 1980s showed that the land is owned by Palestinians.

Apparently there was a FIDE meeting in Jerusalem today and I wonder if the venue was the same as for the World Team Championship? FIDE Director Nigel Short was flying in to attend.

FIDE Director Nigel Short
I thought he resigned after that spat with the US Virgin Islands Federation or maybe just its president. But perhaps that was as a vice-President. He's now listed as Director for Chess Development .
