I am sure I should know this, but why are Armenia listed before Uzbekistan?
I don't know why. Nor do I know whether you should know why.

I think that the listing is in Seeding Number order.

My guess:
Gold: Armenia
Silver: Uzbekistan
Bronze: USA

Adams seems to have thrown away the win in his game.
His opponent's defensive configuration is new to me.

Usually you would defend by parking the King on g7 or h7 and check the King from the first rank.
Look up "Vancura"
It was new to me too!
In the form of a study attributed to Chéron (1923), this defensive setup appears in the manuals by Levenfish & Smyslov, Keres and Balashov & Prandstetter, as well as Batsford's Chess Endings (HT Dennis Monokroussos).
Has it ever occurred before in a published game?

So, David Howell again isn't playing. Perhaps ordinary ECF members who, collectively, contribute substantially towards the cost of fielding English Olympiad teams will want to know why. I do.

The exact position was reached on move 69 of the first game and the final move (75) of the second.

Via Emil Sutovsky's FB page: "Uzbekistan has officially been entitled to host the Chess Olympiad-2026" I have been following the Olympiad six hours straight for the last three rounds with Leko and Svidler for company, no breaks, no ads, no guests and yet it has been utterly compelling. going to miss their commentary in the coming days. One of the subjects they were talking about today was the rise of Uzbekistan as a leading chess nation which appears to stem from when Kasimdzanov was World Champion. Made me wonder if Nigel or Mickey had made it to the top whether we would be looking at a team of unbelievably good English juniors at the top of the standings.

Nunn's Chess Endings volume 2 has practical examples of the Vancura defence.

Well how about:

Both the ECF members to whom you refer, and actual and prospective sponsors, like to see our teams and players being successful at Olympiads.

An individual Gold medal constitutes a major success.

Hi Angus,

David is coming home with a gold medal. The ECF media team should swing into action and make something out of that.
Though the Commonwealth Games are currently hogging the headlines and some readers will no doubt think the Chess
Olympiad was being held in Birmingham. But Bravo! must be in order.

How many hours did it take him to win that gold medal. Let's pluck out of the air an average of 2½ hours a game.
(it will be longer than that but you will see where I'm going.) That is 20 hours of hard graft.

Yesterday I watched some bloke on the TV diving into a swimming pool who was in the air for 3 seconds at the most.
He too got a gold medal. He will also get more column inches than David. It's not fair.
Maybe Leonard can come up with or use 'David Howell Wins Gold by Making a Big Splash in India.'

(can David swim? What does he look like in swimming trunks, I have idea!)

The golden rule of the Swiss system says that two wins at the end are a guarantee of a good result. We won against Canada today. Tomorrow Hungary. So Good luck !!!

The last round starts at 5:30 am.

1. Is Katarzyna Toma normally a Grunfeld player? She seems to have played her first seven moves swiftly and then taken seven minutes to reply to 8 Bb5+, which I'm sure (and I don't play the opening) is not so unusual).

2. Mickey Adams also seems to have been a little unfamiliar with the opening he selected.

3.

I don't disagree with any of this, but I really wouldn't mind the thinking behind team selections actually set out by the team captain. There's nothing abnormal about this in sport these days.

4. Anybody else had consistent trouble in getting on to Chess24 the last few days? The Open section at least simply doesn't want to load at all and today isn't the first time (I'm on Chess.com instead, which I do not prefer). Not that it matters so much as I will be shopping, driving and cooking all morning so annoyingly I will miss most of the final round.

5. Whoops. And indeed. And.

6. Do what?
