Budapest in 2024, hmmm.

Orban could quite conceivably have Putined himself by then.

By doing what? Invading Austria?

A different direction is maybe more likely (think of where he made that recent notorious speech)

Freddy Gordon and his mum have been self isolating since last Friday so I'm not sure when they will be allowed to travel home.
Hi Loz,

This has appeared on Facebook by Andrew Muir, A condensed version of the captains report.

However, our olympiad is not yet over for two of the travelling party.
Maya and Freddy Gordon remain in Chennai and will do so until at least Saturday.

As I type this I am still annoyed and frustated at how this issue has developed. However this is nothing
compared with what Maya and Freddy have had to deal with as they remain in their bedroom for eight days
before being allowed to leave.

it is not the fact that they have to isolate - they tested positive for covid - it was the complete lack of support
and communication from Fide, medical staff and the hotel staff. They all had good intentions, but in India you cannot
get anyone to take a decision and we took this to the very highest levels both within Fide and Chennai medical circles.

Firstly I got assurances from the President of the organising committee that the covid strain was so mild
that there would not be an issue with the pair travelling home on schedule. I got the same assurances from
the Fide Finance Director when I met him to ensure any costs would be covered if they had to stay.

The medical staff escalated the issue to to the highest level in Chennai medical circles - most states have a
five day quarantine for this strain of covid - however they were insisting on seven days meaning they had to stay.

I spent my last five days at the olympiad meeting one official after another. Everyone terrified to make a decision
and so Freddy and his mum remain. I sincerely hope they see this out in good spirits and get home safely."

Another team facing a delay to get home is Nauru. Flights from Brisbane are once a week and an 18 hour delay in Singapore was enough to make them miss their flight.

"Another team facing a delay to get home is Nauru."

In case anyone wondered about Nauru.

https://www.cia.gov/the-world-factbook/countries/nauru/

Population about 10 thousand, population Brisbane 2.5 million - they may find it crowded... They do seem to have a higher proportion of doctors to population than Somerset does.

It's great that they played in the Olympiad.

Given the (tiny) size of Nauru, maybe not - its population density is the 25th highest in the world.

Not by Alan Minnican?

Regardless, this seems a poor show by the authorities - who’s footing the bill here?

Hi Alistair,

Andrew Muir posted it on facebook but no mention of Alan Minnican,
who I assumed it was but left it out as I could have been mistaken.

The report was indeed written by Alan Minnican, captain of the Chess Scotland team, and can be found on the Chess Scotland website.

Andrew Muir has copied and pasted it verbatim on Facebook.

Hi Dave,

I'm a fully paid up member of the SCA but due to 'technical problems' cannot get on their forum.
I bet Carl (and others) wished he had the same 'technical problems.' here.

(Is it SCA -Scottish Chess Association or CS - Chess Scotland, been that long since
I was there I do not even know what they are calling themselves these days.)

Any got a link so I can see the British Championship games live in between watching my horse coming in last.

I looked for him at the party, now I know why he wasn't there.

"All three Indian teams were strong but beatable, just like, for instance, the Netherlands, Germany, France, or Spain"

Ouch! Sokolov thinks of strong West European teams whom he regarded as potential contenders and comes up with the above ....
